In New York City, Tony Stark and Rumiko Fujikawa go on an exciting evening that ends in Tony’s hotel bedroom. The next morning, Tony awakens alone to a note from Rumiko telling him she has something planned for them that evening. From the news, Tony learns that a gang of robbers are holding over forty hostages in a Manhattan bank, surrounded by police. Iron Man arrives on the scene to be told by an angry police captain that he isn’t needed. And then Speedball arrives, jumps into the bank and Shellhead is forced to follow him to stop a violent reaction. There’s one anyway with the two heroes fighting the gang while Speedball berates Iron Man over his shoddy treatment of his friends in the New Warriors (actually it was the sentient armor from a few issues ago). After the baddies are vanquished, Iron Man notices that they are all ODing and calls for an ambulance….
Later, Tony learns that all of the robbers have survived their overdoses but none can remember what had happened or why and all traces of any drug were gone from their systems. Jocasta brings Tony a message from Rumiko: she is inviting him to an exclusive costume party at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. One their way—with Tony dressed as Captain America and Rumiko as Invisible Woman—she fills Tony in: these exclusive parties for the rich are thrown by Dr. Max Power with a $10,000 entrance fee, the proceeds going to fund Power’s research facility. The partygoers are addressed by their host, Max Power who is revealed to be an alien. He offers them a new drug and the first volunteer to take one finds himself with the powers of Speedball. Others, Rumiko included, eagerly rush forward to obtain a multitude of superpowers while Tony dashes out to don the Iron Man armor. He heads back inside to witness the young people bursting in a wave of euphoria; he tries to reach Dr. Power but he is smashed across the room by Rumiko who, with the powers of Absorbing Man, has become a brick giant with a grudge against Iron Man….
