Invincible Iron Man #4 Review by (September 24, 2019)
Comments: Part one of two parts. First appearance of Rumiko Fujikawa and the third Firebrand (Richard Dennison); she'll have a lot more staying power than he will. Sean Parsons contributed to the inking.

Review: Stark's WebVoyager software dates this issue quite a bit (it's better than Netscape Navigator!) but the rest is pure gold. Another fast-paced adventure with a very formidable villain who looks really scary on the page. Writing and art are tops and Rumiko is a nice addition to the cast i.e. not as dumb or immature as Tony thinks. It may be 1998 but sometimes Tony is still back in the '60s.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Invincible Iron Man #4 Synopsis by T Vernon
Tony Stark joins with Stark-Fujikawa to unveil their joint project, a new web browser called WebVoyager. The presentation is taking place on the Caribbean island of Isla Suerte, a popular tourist site for the rich and famous. While sunning on the beach, Tony contacts Happy Hogan and invites him and Pepper Potts to come down; Happy awkwardly tells him that he and Pepper are divorced, largely from the pressures of her being in demand as an executive secretary and him having no job, with some cheating added for good measure. Tony broods over this, then realizes he has been staring at a woman for several minutes....

That evening at a party held in the island's casino, Morgan Stark of Stark-Fujikawa plays host and Tony thinks he's spied James Rhodes but he is introduced to Kenjiro Fujikawa, the founder of the company and his granddaughter Rumiko who was the girl Tony was staring at on the beach. Rumiko steers Tony away from Sunset Bain and they go for a walk on the beach. They talk about the island's unique economic situation and how she is dating Tony Stark just to annoy her parents; as Tony starts wondering if she's as childish as she sounds, the island comes under a flaming attack from the new Firebrand, a being made of living plasma, who is there to punish the rich and powerful for their sins. Tony sends Rumiko back to the hotel to warn everyone while he dashes out and returns as Iron Man. Shellhead confronts the eco-terrorist, mocking his commie rhetoric but is taken by surprise at the villain's power, much more extreme than his predecessor's. Iron Man again challenges him, this time firing at Firebrand's metal harness which focuses his power—but Tony learns that it is also a containment device and the villain begins to overload. Shellhead seizes his foe and plunges him into the ocean to cool him down and the villain escapes underwater. Iron Man returns to the hotel to find a disaster area with Rhodey leading a rescue team and Rumiko organizing the medical facilities. Later, as a group plans what to do about the continuing problems, Firebrand returns and opens fire on the island's dormant volcano, causing it to erupt....
