Rating: 4 stars

In the West Virginia base of the Sons of the Serpent, the two new Defenders, Nighthawk and She-Hulk, with SHIELD Agent Joaquin Pennysworth are fighting the baddies who are planning to instigate race wars by detonating the Madbomb….

Meanwhile, the Supreme Serpent is readying his escape, leaving his ally Cheer Chadwick to supervise. Pennysworth is growing irritated with the bickering Defenders, who are interfering with his plan; when they finally shut up and listen to him, Pennysworth reveals that he wired the whole base with explosives—and he sets them off. Nighthawk grabs his two allies and flies them out and up to the SHIELD Helicarrier, where the gravely injured Pennysworth receives medical attention. Shulkie calls the mission a success but Kyle is still brooding over what happened to the young agent. She says her farewells and exits the comic….

Last Defenders, The (2008 series) #3 Review by (November 11, 2025)

Review: The mishigas (Yiddish for madness) continues as Nighthawk and She-Hulk finally shut up long enough for Pennysworth to follow his plan, a plan that would have come off much better had they not interfered. So Kyle wanders into another unauthorized mission by hiring a trio of low-level supers to play hero. Meanwhile, Yandroth is wandering about the edges of time, space, and this comic book with fancy ideas about destiny for Nighthawk and Son of Satan, the latter seconded by Dr. Strange himself. This series is quite entertaining as it captures the offbeat tone of the original Defenders series, at least after Steve Gerber took over. And here I am writing this on September 20, 20XX, Steve Gerber’s birthday. This happens to me a lot.

Comments: Erik Josten started out as the villain Power Man in the Masters of Evil, and went through a series of alternate identities as both hero and villain. Junta was introduced in BLACK PANTHER (1998) #9-10 and #41-45; he then appeared in CREW #3-7. Issue includes a one-page interview with Aron Coleite, the new X-Men writer, and a five page preview of THE ETERNALS (2008) #1.
