Synopsis

Marvel Chillers (1975 series) #6 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

Tigra is chained up in the villains’ lair, set to destruct, when Red Wolf enters and hurls his tomahawk at her—and cuts the last chain holding her captive. RW explains that his wolf Lobo told him she was not one of the baddies…which doesn’t have time to explain. Then the bombs start detonating and Tigra rescues her rescuer. As the place starts falling in, Lobo leads them to the underground escape sled which they board and drive to safety on the trail of their quarry….

Dr. Joanne Tumolo is worried about Greer “Tigra” Nelson, knowing that Red Wolf is on her trail thinking she’s a villain. Professor Leon reminds her that Greer can take care of herself. Lawyer Jules Bannion tells them he is going to investigate the Rat Pack while Leon and Tumolo work on a serum that will allow Tigra to change form at will. Oh and we also learn that Bannion is working with Joshua Plague….

Meanwhile, Plague is being confronted by the disgruntled Number 1 and the rest of the gang—and there’s now a Number 7—is supporting him. 1 wants to know why Plague has them wearing masks, why they’ve never met his spy, Number 6, why are they stealing astrochemical serums, how did he already know who Tigra is and what is the Soul-Catcher? Plague responds by using the Soul-Catcher to envelop them all in a painful flame, while telling them they were a bunch of losers until he came along. Number 5, the only one loyal to Plague warns him that Tigra has arrived, along with Red Wolf and Lobo. RW goes for 5 while Tigra does a flying kick to knock the Soul-Catcher out of Plague’s hands. 5 tries to push Red Wolf toward a live cable but Lobo attacks him and it is 5 who makes contact with the cable and is electrocuted. As Tigra takes on Joshua Plague, he emits a sinister laugh that begins to hypnotize her. A scream breaks his concentration and Tigra hits him—but the scream came from Number 2 when they saw that Number 5 is a robot, now badly damaged. Plague takes advantage of the distraction to recover the Soul-Catcher and zap Tigra. And now the time for pretense is over so he reveals his true identity—Super-Skrull!

Review / Commentaries

Marvel Chillers (1975 series) #6 Review by (December 4, 2024)

Review: Well, that’s an improvement: the shoddy art from last issue gives way to the great John Byrne and it makes all the difference in the world, giving Tigra the sleek animal appearance the character requires. Meanwhile, Tigra is having trouble with her dual nature, her human and animal parts clashing. Joshua Plague is having labor trouble so he responds by blasting everyone. And we have a fight with a robot who was not previously suspected of being a robot. And we wrap up with a last page reveal that isn’t Doctor Doom for a change. Cool issue and it’s John Byrne we have to thank.
Oh, and the cover dialogue is German for “The, Were-Woman, The.”

Comments: Part three of four parts. Super-Skrull was introduced in FANTASTIC FOUR #18 and has appeared frequently against the FF, Avengers, and other heroes. Gaspar Saladino lettered the first page. The letters page includes one by future Marvel writer/editor Ralph Macchio.
