Murder at the Racetrack

Synopsis

Marvel Mystery Comics (1939 series) #2 synopsis by Julio M2
Rating: 3 stars

A car burst into flames during a race. The Human Torch was among the public and sprints to save the driver, but he’s dead. Two more cars suffer the same outcome. A red plane flies by. Something’s fishy. Blackie Ross, a driver, accuses the Human Torch for the flaming cars and the police bring him in.

In his cell, the Human Torch meets a man named Johnson who says Blackie Ross, the race driver, is behind the fiery cars. Determined to prove his innocence, the Human Torch escapes, and in the next race, corners the pilot of the red plane. He worked for Ross and threw firing bullets to the racers, causing their vehicles to ignite. But the plane explodes, destroying all evidence. The Torch leaves before the police arrive.

Meanwhile, Blackie Ross thinks about finishing the Torch off, since he’s ruining his business. Lola, who works for Ross, has a plan. She lures the Torch into a trap and falls into a vat of water. Locked in it, they throw the Torch into a boiling lime pit. But he escapes and goes after Ross, finding him in the next car race. Ross escapes, and wearing an asbestos suit, pushes the Torch into liquid steel, which surprisingly proves insufficient to hold the superhero. Regardless, the criminal escapes again.

Suddenly, Johnson, the man the Torch met in prison, appears. He’s an undercover agent working for the police on this case and aids the Torch. After a new chase, the Torch finally reaches Ross, trapped in his car, engulfed in flames. Fearing for his life, Ross promises to confess in writing for his crimes if the Torch rescues him. The Torch saves Ross, who, in panic, forgot he still wore an asbestos suit. Police lift all charges against the Torch after proving of his innocence.

Synopsis

By Julio M2
Rating: 4.5 stars

Jane Framan, working for the Smithsonian, arrives at Hong Kong. She plans visiting the temple of Alano in Tibet. It’s presumed to have vast fortunes, and she holds a map revealing the temple’s location. A suspicious-looking man attacks Jane with a knife. But she’s rescued by a vigorous man who, conveniently, was close by.

Jane thanks her rescuer as a businessman, called Sumner, offers to drive her to her hotel. The rescuer places a note in her purse and leaves. The note alerts her to distrust even those who help her.

As the suspicious-looking man appears again, the rescuer follows him. He is the Angel! The hero bursts into the criminal’s lair and knocks them out.

Meanwhile, Sumner enters Jane’s room, steals the map, and brings her at gunpoint. As Sumner intends to kill Jane in a dark alley, the Angel appears and beats him.

The Angel hands the map to Jane and explains that Sumner, Lelong as his real name, was a member of the initial expedition to the temple of Alano. Deprived from the map, he killed his companions, faked his death, changed his name, and craved for the map to get the hidden temple treasures.

Review / Commentaries

Marvel Mystery Comics (1939 series) #2 Review by (December 17, 2024)

Second comic book issue ever published by Marvel (which was called Timely Publications then.)

Numbering continues from their first book, “Marvel Comics”, with the book renamed to “Marvel Mystery Comics”. For indexing, such practice establishes a new book.

Stories feature the same characters of the initial comic, plus an extra one. Pilot Perry Wade, alias American Ace. He is valuable historically for being the first Marvel character with a patriotic identity.

This second publication forms along the first comic, the foundation on which Marvel achieves a respectable comic book publisher level during the year that follows (1940).
