Synopsis

The Order #5 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Samantha (Valkyrie) Parrington’s parents are worried that they can’t find their daughter or her superhero friends. They ask the computer Bunnyhopper who tells them that the Defenders have vanished from the face of the Earth. The computer does bring them (and the reader) up to date on the doings of the Order, who have been shutting down the fossils fuels industry, the nuclear power industry, and the entertainment industry, all for the good of Earth. The Order (Doctor Strange, Sub-Mariner, Professor Hulk, Silver Surfer) meanwhile is reviewing their mission, instilled by Yandroth’s curse, to defend the Earth, so why not improve it…?

On the throne in their fortress on Sky Island, a shadowy figure is materializing upon the throne….

In her realm, Gaia is having second thoughts about these particular four being the proper champions she has needed….

In Manhattan, various heroes have assembled to address the problem: Reed Richards, Iron Man, Captain America, Scarlet Witch, and Professor X, have been scanning the world for a sign of the missing Defenders. Finally, Xavier and Wanda, working together discover a trace of a dimensional breach opened by Dr. Strange. Cap heads out to assemble the Avengers and others….

The Defenders (Nighthawk, Hellcat, Valkyrie, Namorita, She-Hulk, Clea, Ardina) arrive on a distant planet where they are attacked by a giant snail with hypersonic abilities and a massive bat; Valkyrie knocks the one into the other and thus the heroes escape. They come upon several people escaping a volcanic eruptions; the heroes hustle them to safety and then Dr. Christopher Ganyrog and Romantic Objective Pamela arrive to thank them. Hellcat now knows where they are: Yann, the home planet of Yandroth. As he uses his machinery to heal the injured among the Defenders, Dr. Ganyrog explains how Yandroth has set it up so that the anger and violence caused by the Order sends energy to Yann, creating massive upheavals of nature leading to the world’s destruction. This would unleash energy which would return to Earth to power Yandroth’s resurrection from the dead. Ganyrog will send them back to Earth but they must stop the Order without violence as the tipping point is very near…

Back on Earth, the Order debate not just improving the Earth but taking it one step further: forcing the people of Earth to acknowledge their beneficial rule. The figure of Yandroth on the throne smiles….

The Order drops the protective shields around their citadel to face a massive army of superheroes. Cap gives the order to attack. And Yandroth laughs…

Review / Commentaries

The Order #5 Review by (March 1, 2022)

Review: It’s issue #5 and we finally learn what dead Yandroth has been up to. Seems a bit complicated but I would imagine effecting one’s own resurrection from the dead would be. And we also see one of the most massive assemblies of heroes in Marvel history, more than any of the Infinity Gauntlet stories though maybe not as many as AVENGERS: ENDGAME, to beat the renegade Defenders into shape—and also the warning that they must be defeated without violence lest the enemy win. I would like to see how this happens. Fortunately issue #6 is at hand….

Comments: Numbered both #5 and in a smaller font, #17, as a continuation of DEFENDERS Vol. 2/2001 series. She-Hulk refers to LAND OF THE GIANTS, a sci-fi TV series that ran from 1968-1970. Assembled heroes include Black Knight, Warbird, the Fantastic Four, Quicksilver, Daredevil, Wonder Man, Vision, Triathlon, Wolverine, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Phoenix, Beast, Nightcrawler, Chamber, Iceman, Spider-Man, Wasp, Ant-Man, Iron Fist, and Yellowjacket; the final two-page spread includes many more. Christopher Ganyrog and Romantic Objective Pamela of Yann are pastiches of DC’s Adam Strange and Alanna of Rann; this is their first appearance. Written by Jo Duffy and Kurt Busiek. Colors credited to Gregory Wright and Tom Smith’s Color Arts.
