Savage Hulk #2 Review by (May 12, 2021)

Review: There are a number of villains in the Marvel Universe that it is a pleasure to see taking a beating. My favorite in this category is probably Mister Hyde but Abomination is high on the list. And this issue’s battle between them is one of the best. The fight is nicely drawn by Alan Davis as is the climactic “cure Hulk” sequence. Aces all over. And Jean Gray becomes the first She-Hulk, even though we learn next issue at it is all an illusion.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Savage Hulk #2 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

In the Nevada desert, the X-Men (Marvel Girl, Cyclops, Havok, Angel, Iceman), searching for the Hulk, suddenly find themselves fighting the Abomination. The Army had been searching for Hulk and detected the Abomination, just as they had. As Cyclops and Havok try shooting down the Army’s missiles, the others do their best but the monster seizes Angel, demanding to have their Hulk-seeking device….

Bruce Banner, relaxing at dinner with Jeb and Dorothy, a kindly old couple in a camper, is disturbed by the shelling nearby and tells them to get away just as he transforms into the Hulk….

Just as it looks like Abomination will destroy Jean, Hulk arrives and yanks him away by the eyebrows and the battle is on, the two smashing each other while the X-Men run for cover. Abom demands that the Hulk acknowledge he is the stronger. Hulk doesn’t like this and makes a massive crater in the ground with his foe’s head, proving “Hulk is the strongest one of all!” And he hurls the unconscious bad guy at the approaching army, destroying a tank. Major Glenn Talbot decides to focus on locking up the Abomination and coming back for Hulk another day….

The heroes return to the cave lab with Bruce Banner, unaware that the Leader is spying on them via a mechanical lizard. Professor X explains to Bruce that he thinks the device for mental exhaustion can cure him of being Hulk with an added telepathic component. Bruce sits in the chair, the machine is turned on, and Xavier exerts his influence. Hulk’s power grows stronger and stronger until it bursts free—and Marvel Girl is transformed into a She-Hulk….
