Synopsis

Secret Defenders, The (1993 series) #10 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 5 stars

On Phobos, Nebula is set to launch a fusion-reaction bomb with the Silver Surfer chained to it at her enemies on Titan. Thunderstrike and War Machine are facing her giant monster lieutenants Kurg and Kruk, whose nerve endings have been cauterized, so they feel no pain. Nebula takes off in her ship as the battle on the ground begins. WM tries firing a huge missile but it doesn’t harm the giants. The heroes keep pounding with what they have but the giants keep coming back for more. So Thunderstrike suggests he take on both of the bad guys while War Machine goes after Nebula’s ship before it makes the jump into hyperspace. WM catches up to the ship as it makes the jump, tearing his way into a hold. Geatar sees something odd on the instruments so he goes back to the hold to investigate. War Machine throws him overboard. Rhodey goes to the bridge and confronts the villainess. She presses the button launching the warhead and gives WM the choice: capture her or stop the bomb to save Silver Surfer. WM takes off after the bomb, disarms it and frees the Surfer. SS asks Rhodey to guide the bomb to a safe spot on Titan’s surface while he goes after Nebula. As Nebula wonders why there was no Titan-shattering KABOOM, SS arrives, shrugs off her gunfire and punches her lights out.

Surfer with Nebula links up with War Machine as they head to deliver her back to prison. She vows that her sidekick Geatar will rescue her only to be told that Geatar is drifting in space somewhere. They hand her over to Mentor and return to Phobos to check on Thunderstrike, whom they find standing quietly amid acres of defeated monsters and aliens. Astonished, Rhodey asks how he beat them. Eric responds that he realized it was like building a skyscraper: you’ll be fine if you just start at the bottom and work your way to the top. Surfer thanks them for their help and promises he will be available to them when they are in need….

Back on Earth, Doctor Strange was watching via crystal; Wong praises him for his choice of heroes to handle matters where he could not intervene himself. But Strange is concerned with the future which he cannot see….

Secret Defenders, The (1993 series) #10 Review by (June 18, 2025)

Review: The writing is great (see last issue’s review) but the startlingly vibrant art is what makes the issues. I’m not familiar with Tom Grindberg/Don Hudson but their art looks like Mike Mignola imitating Jack Kirby for an intense effect. And instead of the earth tones favored by HELLBOY, we have some electric bright colors by John Kalisz to keep our attention on the tale all the way through. Very enjoyable.

Comments: Part two of two parts. Editor-in-Chief Tom DeFalco is billed as “Pirate Cap’n.” Geatar returns in the next issue. And my reference to the Titan-shattering KABOOM was cribbed from HAREWAY TO THE STARS, a Bugs Bunny cartoon.
