Synopsis

Secret Defenders, The (1993 series) #21 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

In Seattle, Cody Fleischer finally comes to terms with the fact that he is dead and he cannot go back to his old life. He receives a mental summons from Dr. Druid, calling him by his new identity Cadaver, summoning him to San Francisco. Cadaver steals a motorbike and heads off down the highway. Coming to a toll booth and not wishing to be delayed, he draws the Sword of Bone from his chest and slashes his way through the obstacle, calling himself the Pale Horseman. Onlookers mistake him for Ghost Rider….

In the sewers of San Francisco, Dr. Druid and Spider-Woman are trapped as part of a pyramid of bodies called the Panentropic Engine by its creator, a madman calling himself Slaymaker. He explains that as a child his mind was full of artistic vision but he had no skill or talent to create art so he turned to magic, learning the art of transfiguration. And his new creation, the Panentropic Engine, will enable him to manipulate and transform all of reality, molding it according to his vision. Druid attempts to hypnotize his foe but Slaymaker slaps some green goop across his eyes, blinding him….

Slaymaker sics his mutant monsters on him. U.S. Agent, who was following him, enters to a bizarre sight. Agent joins Cadaver in fighting the horde of monsters and Druid asks SW’s permission to see through her eyes and so sets Cadaver ablaze, his fiery form terrifying the villain’s monsters. U.S. Agent tries to rescue Spider-Woman (his original mission) but she warns him that she is fused to all the other bodies and it might be dangerous to extract her. Druid asks SW to weave a psionic web through the Engine then he will use his will to take it from the villain and use it to free them. There’s a massive explosion and Slaymaker is now trapped within his own mind, seeing it all as his vision of the world. Druid tells Spider-Woman and U.S. Agent to summon help for the injured while he and Cadaver return home….

Secret Defenders, The (1993 series) #21 Review by (September 3, 2025)

Review: This rather baroque adventure concludes with a lot going on, centering (sort of) on Slaymaker, an artist with magic powers to mess with reality. He is an interesting character, marked by an ornate literary form of speech that must have been either a delight or a nightmare for the writers to devise; I would have liked to see him again but no; perhaps there were already too many villains who could manipulate reality—though you’d think that an idea like that could never grow stale. But Cadaver has a nice turn as a faux Ghost Rider, finally understanding his new nature as a revenant superhero and his ability to pull a flaming sword out of his chest is the epitome of comic book cool. U.S. Agent also appears with a character-defining moment with some punks, warning them to straighten up their lives before walking into a melee and having to fight by instinct as he does not know who is the good guys and who is the bad guys. Shadowoman appears only briefly to set up her role in the next (and final) story arc. Dr. Druid mainly gets goop thrown in his face; Spider-Woman doesn’t have much to do. Everything kind of pulls together to make a cool story.

Comments: Part two of two parts. Final appearance of the Slaymaker. Slaymaker quotes Shakespeare, Lewis Carroll, Jonathan Swift, and David Lynch, among many others. The events of this story take place before FORCE WORKS #1, largely because of Spider-Woman. Written by Tom Brevoort and Mike Kanterovich.
