Thor #14 Review by (June 26, 2019)

Review: The War of the Realms tie-ins to THOR have centered on supporting characters brought into the limelight for a few moments to shine; first it was Loki (who is used to shining) and then Cul Borson and now Young Thor. Young Thor was an immature bonehead who acted on lust for mead and women rather than on his brains. Here, however, he appears as a frustrated and bitter fighter, perpetually unworthy of Mjolnir who finally performs a selfless act in trying to rescue the All-Mother that he is declared worthy on an instant and thus grows before our eyes. Scott Hepburn's art, while a bit more conventional than we've been seeing in Thor over the years (I still miss Russell Dauterman) suits the character with its slightly comical edge carried over from Hepburn's work on Deadpool. Neat issue and it leads nicely into WOTR #6 and last.

Comments: Expanded version of the Thors' battle with Malekith in WAR OF THE REALMS #6 and ending short of its finish.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Thor #14 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Young Thor is once again trying to lift Mjolnir and once again he is not yet worthy. Then Mr. Fantastic and the Thing arrive to summon him to a battle in the future, producing Toothgrinder as proof they they are telling the truth. Young Thor arrives in the ruins of Asgard to meet Modern Thor, now blind in one eye, Kng Thor, and Jane Thor. Jane doesn't trust this immature, angry young Thor and the situation is uncertain yet the four Thors unite though only three have hammers....

At Stonehenge, Malekith, now empowered by the Venom symbiote and wielding the Venom Blade, awaits Thor coming to rescue Odin and Freyja. The quartet arrives, freeing their parents who stick around to fight Malekith's forces. But the villain also has the Black Hammer of the Accursed and sets his sights on Young Thor, knowing that if he dies young, the older two Thors will cease to exist. Young Thor battles Dark Elves with his axe and King Thor takes on Malekith. Young Thor spots the Mjolnir dropped by his oldest version but he is not able to lift it—until the symbiote attacks Freyja and he leaps into action to save the one parent who has shown him love and compassion especially when he didn't deserve it and his selfless act suddenly enables him to lift Mjolnir and smash the symbiote to pieces. Realizing what he has just done, he stands amazed and then returns King Thor's hammer to him and takes up his axe once more to do battle....
