Tomb of Dracula #47 Review by (August 24, 2021)

Review: Wow, three pointless romantic tales to clutter up the page count! Really, why are Harold and Aurora still in the comic? Did anyone miss Safron? Did anyone even remember Safron? And at least Rachel has sense to reject Frank so we may be spared their conflicts in the future. It’s a good thing the main story is so good as to atone for the hanky-panky.
The ceremony of impregnating Domini was rather startling, not merely that they hid the nudity involved but also suggesting that Dracula, being dead, couldn’t generate sperm, an aspect of vampires never before mentioned. And so the gestation period begins, with multiple revelations to the reader that thing won’t be THE OMEN but more of a surprise for the bad guys, as Christ intervenes yet again.

Comments: Safron’s first appearance in this title since issue #24, though she did show up in Blade’s solo series in VAMPIRE TALES #8 and MARVEL PREVIEW #3. One of the letters in the letters column is by Dean Mullaney, future founder of Eclipse Enterprises.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Tomb of Dracula #47 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Dracula and his bride Domini both express concern that they are in love with one another for reasons they do not understand. Dracula relates his life story to her, stressing how he is still a warrior, intending to dominate the world through his new religion….

At the Boston airport, Blade welcomes his girlfriend Safron Caulder, there for a nightclub booking and he brushes off the impatient Hannibal King while canoodling with his honey….

Harold H. Harold shows up for his date with Aurora Rabinowitz, only to find she has forgotten it was that night; she reluctantly goes with him….

In Boston Common, Rachel van Helsing talks to Frank Drake about how she doesn’t like the changes that have come over him, making him stronger but more of a macho jerk. His response is to force a kiss on her and she pushes him away and stalks off angrily….

At the Church of the Damned, Anton Lupeski presides over the dark rites to impregnate Domini with Dracula’s seed. The portrait of Jesus Christ watches over this, knowing that the outcome will not be what is expected and what the child will become. But then an old man with a shotgun enters, shooting down Lupeski’s followers; Dracula seizes him by the throat to punish him. Domini tries to intervene but Lupeski holds her back. The man prays to Christ for forgiveness and the vampire bites his neck, drinking his blood. Domini reveals that the dead man was her father, always seeking to rescue his erring daughter. Dracula departs, full of plans for his son and his new religion, while Domini knows the truth: her father was forgiven and so the Lord let him die before Dracula bit him, meaning he will not rise again as a vampire but rest in peace. And the child will not be the Devil’s son after all….
