Thor #389 Review by (November 16, 2020)

Review: An impressive climax to the Celestial mini-epic also humbles the boneheaded Thor, who needed to learn that there are people—and beings—much smarter than he and with better judgment and purer motives. The tale echoed a familiar verse from Scripture “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.”—Isaiah 55:8. And even a god must take heed.

Comments: Part three of three parts. Appearing in Thor’s memories are Odin, the Warriors Three, Sif, Balder, Hercules, Captain America, Wasp, Captain Marvel (M. Rambeau), Black Knight.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Thor #389 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Pegas the Pirate King seeks to escape the doomed Pangoria by tapping the planet’s molten core to punch a hole in the force barrier the Celestials have erected around Pangoria….

Thor, meanwhile, is in the brain of Exitar the Exterminator, battling an army of humanoids—and winning. He reaches Exitar’s exposed brain and attacks it with a hammer—but nothing happens as the Celestials are immune to damage from their servants’ weapons. So, Thor hurls himself into the brain, ready to destroy it with his bare hands….

On the planet, Pegas manages to drill a hole in the force barrier. His mistress Myla refuses to accompany him, instead choosing to stay with her doomed world; she finds a group of abandoned children and tries to comfort them as they await the end….

In Exitar’s brain, Thor is thrown into a kaleidoscope of his own memories before dissolving into light—and Exitar spits him out into the distant capital where Myla finds him. Then Arishem gives the signal to Exitar and a blanket of energy spreads over the world, killing the pirates in their ships with Pegas begging for help until the swift end….

Thor and Myla await as the shroud of death covers them—and then lifts, revealing the planet has been transformed into a lush wilderness. A replicoid of Thor created by the Celestials explains that Pangoria has been given a second chance. The replicoid shows that it was the judgment of Arishem that the planet be purified of its evil (the pirates) and allowed the worthy to survive to create a new civilization. In fact, it’s only the boneheaded Thor, who thinks he can judge the gods, that threatens the planet’s development so it restores Thor to health along with his hammer, battle armor, and other possessions and quickly transports him back to Midgard. And Thor is delighted to be back….

Epilogue: Asgard is invaded by the forces of Seth, the Serpent God of Death….
