The Mighty Thor #705 Review by (March 22, 2018)

Review: An absolute knock out. Dauterman's lovely artwork (with Wilson's delicate coloring) makes magic happen, with the horror and confusion aptly portrayed by the fragmented and shifting panels. All the better to showcase a beautiful portrait of self-sacrifice at a time of severe crisis. Thor never faced a greater challenge, and it never cost Thor so much.

Comments: Bannered “Marvel Legacy: The Death of the Mighty Thor.” Many series characters can be spotted in a crowd scene including a battered and bandaged Volstagg (see issue #701).

The Mighty Thor #705 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Many months ago, Jane Foster, in obedience to a voice in her head, had Heimdall send her to the moon via Bifrost where she picked up Mjolnir to become the new Thor....

Now she is in furious battle with Mangog as Asgardia is plunging into the sun. She hurls the foe into a giant golden statue where the heat melts the gold, coating Mangog. Odin and Freyja warn her to escape before the monster kills her; she replies that she is Asgardia's only hope. Thor Odinson is shocked that she has transformed into Thor, effectively killing herself. She tells them to tell the gods that they must earn the trust of their worshipers. Mangog returns and as they battle in close quarters, the monster sees in her eyes that she hates the gods as well. She agrees but also claims that the gods have also helped mankind and she is returning the favor. As the monsters beat her brutally he asks why she would die for the gods? She responds, thinking of Thor Odinson, that she is dying for love..and then she hurls Mangog into the sun. There is only a brief respite before Mangog returns, destroying the gods' escape vessel, and again Jane Thor engages with him. Would she die like a god? is the monster's question—her response? “I shall not die alone!” Thor Odinson joins her as Asgardia makes its final fall into the sun. Jane Thor binds Mangog with the chains forged to hold Fenris until the day of Ragnarok, attaches Mjolnir to it and, with a reminder that he was defeated by a mortal, hurls him into the heart of the sun. Odinson is shocked that she would destroy Mjolnir, truly killing herself. The two have only a few moments to share a kiss before she once again becomes the dying Jane Foster and the fragment of Asgardia they are standing on vanishes into the sun. The gods look on and despair for them—and then Thor lands, cradling Jane in his arms....
