Synopsis

Ultimate Origins #2 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars

Today: the Fantastic Four are summoned to Project Pegasus, a remote SHIELD base in Wyoming by Carol Danvers. The facility is the storage space for bizarre and alien objects accumulated by the government. The FF have been called in for their expertise in dealing with an odd occurrence: after decades of sitting dormant, a carved stone stele has suddenly switched on—with a creepy red light shining on them all….

New York, 1942: Steve Rogers, rejected for military service because of his frail health, tries once again to enlist—but this time a Sergeant Dugan takes him into a secret facility where Steve is chosen to become a test subject for Project: Rebirth. Steve’s will to fight for his country seems to be the missing ingredient in the formula: the injection of the serum, turns him into a super-soldier. At that moment a Nazi spy guns down Dr. Erskine. Steve apprehends him but it is too late to save the scientist. Unobserved by anyone in the room, a carved stone stele witnesses everything…. Steve meets with President Roosevelt, who explains Steve’s new role as the symbol of America’s ideals and the burden that will entail. Later, Steve bids farewell to his girlfriend Gail. "When will you be back?" she asks. "When I’m done."
