Web of Black Widow #1 Review by (March 10, 2020)

Review: Nice limited series for Black Widow, seeking redemption for her earlier misdeeds, though that’s been Winter Soldier’s shtick for the past few years. Even though “bad guy double impersonates hero” is one of the oldest hack plots, it comes off a bit fresher here, with fine support from a familiar supporting cast. The only sour point is the covers, very nicely done but Natasha is way too baby faced to be credible, and the final issue gives her large eyes and a pointy chin to look like a manga version of herself.

Comments: Captain America appears only at the other end of Iron Man’s call. Issue includes a note from artist Stephen Mooney on this new limited series.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Web of Black Widow #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

A disguised Black Widow (dark hair and evening gown) arrives at a classy New York charity event with her eye on one Walter Sobol; Tony Stark is there and she dances with him and warns him to stay out of her way. She goes to the control room where she had earlier drugged the technician and inserts a thumb drive into a port….

Her mind is full of fractured memories of how the Red Room’s Headmistress assigned her to assassinate a target for Walter Sobol’s grandfather….

At the event, Sobol introduces a presentation for his charity but what comes on screen is pictures of his father and grandfather. Sobol’s security team is at the control room and Natasha is ready for them. She fires her stings and throws a lot of kicks and races to the roof where she is met by Iron Man. Shellhead confronts her about her actions and she explains that she is trying to right the wrongs she made as a Soviet killer, specifically the company that was built by Sobel’s grandfather having his enemies and rivals murdered, though Walter is unaware of this. She then vanishes, revealing she was a hologram. Tony calls Steve Rogers to report while another Black Widow watches from the shadows….
