Trap For a Terrorist!

Synopsis

Amazing Spider-Man, The (1963 series) #95 synopsis by Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Spider-Man swings around New York, still unable to get Gwen off his mind. He decides that he needs to head to London to see her but has no idea how he’s going to accomplish that. Peter heads to the Daily Bugle and Joe Robertson sees Peter looking despondent. Peter explains the situation and Robbie decides to help out by sending Peter on a photo op to London on the Bugle’s dime! An elated Peter runs to tell Aunt May about his imminent trip. He runs into Mary Jane there and barely even notices her, which she takes joking offense to. A few hours later, Harry drives Peter to the airport and soon enough Peter is airborne for London! On the plane ride, Peter ends up talking to a little boy in the seat behind him and meets his dad, discovering he’s a well-known American delegate named Herbert Knowles.

Just as the plane lands in London, Peter and the other passengers hear over the loudspeakers that they’re all being held as hostages! Terrorists have placed a bomb under the landing ramp and are threatening to detonate it unless their demands are met. Peter slips away and changes to Spider-Man. He smashes through the bottom of the plane and crawls to where the landing ramp is connected and is able to kick it away before the waiting terrorists can detonate it! With the bomb dealt with, the plane is evacuated, when Spidey discovers that the terrorists have grabbed Knowles and his son. Realizing Knowles was their real target, Spidey chases after the terrorists’ car and is able to place a spider tracer on the car before they escape. Afterwards, Spidey meets some of the local British police who reveal that the terrorists are hoping to force their imprisoned partners to be released by holding Knowles ransom.

After the British police start asking too many questions, Spidey decides to do things his way and swings off in search of the terrorists. However, Gwen, at her aunt and uncle’s place, happens to notice Spider-Man swinging around out her window! This causes her to faint, thinking that Spider-Man came all the way here to finish her off, just as he did her father! Eventually, Spidey gets a lock on his spider tracer and finds the car driving across a bridge. He sets up his camera and tackles the goons, easily taking them out. He interrogates the last guy, who says they plan to kill their hostages at 7, claiming their fate has been sealed by time itself!

Spidey frantically searches for Knowles and his son, before the terrorist’s comment makes him realize that they’re being held at Big Ben! Spidey rescues them in the nick of time and presents them safely to the police. Peter at first feels like everything has worked out before a newspaper makes him realize that all of London knows Spider-Man is there! This means he can’t go see Gwen as Peter or else she’d instantly put two and two together! Meanwhile, Gwen sees Spider-Man’s heroic efforts on the news and wonders if perhaps she misjudged him. She and Peter both pine for each other, and he makes his way to the airport, wondering if perhaps this is for the best.

Review / Commentaries

Amazing Spider-Man, The (1963 series) #95 Review by (July 30, 2025)

Review: Spidey heads to London and ends up embroiled in a terrorist plot! Peter is unable to get Gwen off his mind and Robbie does him a real solid by sending him to London on a photo op. And of course he gets into trouble literally the second he lands! He gets sucked in to an admittedly pretty standard terrorist plot, but it still makes for a very solid, well-structured issue. It’s pretty cool seeing Spidey in an atypical setting. Spidey saves the day but realizes that now that the whole city knows Spider-Man is there, he can’t go see Gwen as Peter! Even by comic book standards, she’d be able to put two and two together too easily! So naturally, he can’t even capitalize on the reason he went there in the first place. Such is the Parker Luck. You’d think the same issue would apply with Robbie; it would be pretty suspicious that Peter would get photos of Spider-Man in London the same time he was there! Also, no surprise, but Stan’s dialogue for the British characters is pretty over the top and full of stereotypical British jargon, though inoffensive enough. Overall, this still made for a good, charming issue, placing Spidey in an atypical setting!

Comments: First time (as far as I’m aware), Spidey heads out of the United States.
