Moon Knight vs the Avengers

Synopsis

Avengers #33 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
Moon Knight is praying to the Moon outside the gates of K'un-Lun. He's not in his usual garb, except for it being all white. He has a full-head mask tied at the back like Iron Fist's, barechested save for an ankh on a loop round his neck, and mummy wrappings on his arms. The city guards detected his arrival hours ago and sent for Iron Fist from New York, which is what the Knight wanted. He calls himself the Fist Of Khonshu and he seeks the Iron Fist, and Daniel Rand says he's here. But Moonie says he wants the *Iron Fist*.

There follows a fight of Martial Arts moves vs blows from the Fists Of Khonshu. Danny thinks his foe is suffering from 1 of his mental problems or being controlled by Khonshu. But then the Moon flares bright and MK says he's sane and completely in control as IF unleashes the Iron Fist. Moon Knight brandishes his ankh which also glows. And Danny Rand screams in pain, as does MK, as the ankh sucks the dragon power out of him.

Next stop is Dr Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum in Greenwich Village where the good Doctor is beset by a horde of mummies, bird-masked priests of Khonshu and Moon Knight in a white suit (but still with full head-mask) carrying a 2nd ankh and answering to the name Marc Spector. Spector hits the Sorcerer Supreme in the forehead with a knuckleduster fashioned from the Iron Fist, and the Moon priests blast him with their staffs. MK declares that tonight is the biggest supermoon in a million years, and he absorbs power from DrS in his 2nd ankh.

Next in Hillrock Heights, East LA Robbie Reyes (Ghost Rider) wakes up feeling awful. He looks out the window and sees his demonic Hell Charger car gone. We see Moon Knight driving it with a 3rd ankh powered up.

Steven Rogers (Captain America) contacts Black Panther in Wakanda to warn him what's happening. But Panther is already confronted by mummies, bird-masked priests and some others with Pharoah masks and sickle weapons. He tells the Captain not to come here but guard the Starbrand child. He leaves the Avengers in his hands because he doesn't expect to return to Avengers Mountain.

Moon Knight steps forth in his usual garb with 3 ankhs round his neck. He tells BP he can avoid a war by facing him 1-on-1. Panther instead surrenders, and MK whips out a 4th ankh to steal *his* power. But nothing happens. BP says his power is in his blood (courtesy of the heart-shaped herbs), so MK will have to take *him* to Khonshu.

Thor is on the way to Midgard to answer Cap's summons, but on the way he sees Moon Knight on the Moon (still with only 3 ankhs) and decides to end the problem himself. He gives MK 1 chance to surrender then hurls Mjolnir at him. But the Knight is able to stop the hammer in flight. He reminds the Asgardian that its Uru metal dates from the early days of the universe, but now says that it was part of the 1st moon and as such falls under the sway of the Moon God Khonshu. So saying he sends Mjolnir back to beat up its master and propel him out into space. Where he is smothered by moons summoned from all over the cosmos.

Mjolnir returns to Moon Knight who is granted a meeting with Khonshu who tells the Steven Grant persona that these 4 powers may not be enough. But Grant replies that Panther can't be made to serve, the Phoenix Force has no current host and the Starbrand is hidden. The 3rd persona arises, Jake Lockley/Mr Knight, who says he's ready to fight the Devil (presumably Mephisto who's been plotting in the background for most of this series) as the Fist Of Khonshu, Earth's Mightiest Hero. Khonshu says they can now save the World.

Review / Commentaries

Avengers #33 Review by (May 29, 2020)
This is part 1 of The Age Of Khonshu.

Moon Knight used the 3 aliases Marc Spector, Steven Knight and Jake Lockley since the 1st issue of his 1st series, but it was only later that they were described as a multiple personality disorder.
He was given his powers by Khonshu in that 1st issue but it was only in his 2nd series that he was given extra powers as the Fist Of Khonshu.
And in his 7th series in 2014 he gained a 4th persona Mr Knight.

A supermoon occurs when the Moon is full while at the perigee of its orbit, its closest position to Earth. This year's supermoon was the closest for nearly a century, but not the closest in a million years.
