Things Fall Apart

Synopsis

Avengers Academy #19 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

The Absorbing Man, possessed by Greithoth, Breaker of Wills, has turned the Infinite Mansion’s Pym Particle generator against the Mansion, causing it to grow through the Microverse until it breaks through into the regular world, crushing a city when it happens. Creel is joined by Titania, possessed by Skirn, Breaker of Men, and they intend to kill the students of Avengers Academy as an act of revenge against Giant-Man (Hannk Pym)…

…who is recovering from injuries sustained in Dubai aboard an aircraft carrier bound for the USA, with his teammates Quicksilver, Tigra, Justice. When he awakens, he senses something wrong at the Infinite Mansion…

…where Finesse explains to Hazmat and Striker that she can activate a program that will destroy the Mansion, sparing the lives of all in the area of its return. She also notes that if Creel and Titania are inside at that time they will die as well. But they need a volunteer to make sure the two villains are still in the Mansion when it is destroyed—and this person would surely die as well. As would Finesse as she activates the program. The other three, Mettle, Veil, and Reptil, arrive and a debate ensues. Finesse suggests Hazmat as the only one who has slowed down the villains. Mettle, Hazmat’s boyfriend, is enraged but it’s Hazmat who agrees to handle that task…so Mettle volunteers to join her. Veil objects to this but Striker pushes her to the door. Reptil tells Finesse she’s a hero and kisses her and she returns it. She takes her position at the controls while Hazmat and Mettle locate the baddies. There is a fight, Finesse gets ready to activate the program. Then Giant-Man crashes through the wall and rescues Hazmat and Mettle while Quicksilver relieves Finesse as he can trigger the program and be gone before it detonates. They are over Chicago, the students are rescued, the Mansion explodes…but Absorbing Man and Titania have gotten away safely. Their master, the Serpent, is summoning them so they depart with a threat to return to kill Hank Pym and his students….

Later the adults address the kids, Tigra saying she is proud, they acted like Avengers…but Veil rejects that. They sent a bunch of kids into a war zone then put them in a position where some had to choose suicide and she can’t get the horrors out of her head. So she quits and walks away, tossing her mask behind….

Review / Commentaries

Avengers Academy #19 Review by (November 19, 2024)

Review: The action is cool but the sci-fi nonsense is a bit too heavy, creating unbelievable dilemmas for the students. Who lives? Who dies? What’s going on again? Explain the Pym Particle generator one more time? Wait, go back to the Underspace thing. Fake emotions generated by a fake scenario. Of course, this is a comic book and we can shrug all this off and revel in the fast pace and excitement. ‘Cuz that’s what comics are for.

Story takes place between FEAR ITSELF #3 and 4. Title comes from the much-quoted poem "The Second Coming" by W.B. Yeats. Issue includes a page from MOMENT OF SILENCE #1 and five pages from HEROES #1, to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City.
