Avengers Assemble #7 Review by (October 22, 2013)
In-Betweener and Stranger aren't actually members of the group styling themselves Elders of the Universe, although they are beings who've been around a very long time. The Elders like Champion, Collector and Contemplator are the last members of extinct races from early in the history of the universe. They have become immortal and each chosen a speciality to devote their time to. But In-Betweener is a cosmic entity like Chaos and Order. Stranger is also an immortal alien of unknown provenance, but it has been suggested he too is a cosmic entity related to the Living Tribunal. I don't know why Thanos singled these guys out for revenge. Stranger *was* part of a cosmic consortium that defeated him in the Infinity Gauntlet limited series. But when Thanos met Champion, Contemplator and In-Betweener during Thanos Quest he bested them to obtain their Infinity Gems. And I don't know of any meeting with Contemplator. But they all may have clashed outside Marvel's known history. I also don't know why Iron Man's suit didn't protect him from the vacuum, even if it isn't specifically space armour. The gun Star-Lord uses to expel the Badoon from his ship seems to me to send them out with a blast of air. I.e. it seems like his Element Gun dating back to his 1st appearance in Marvel Preview #4. But he's supposed to have lost that gun with his sentient Ship and his original costume before the 2003 Thanos series. (But as I said in #5 it now looks like he's got costume and Ship back.) The only sentence Groot ever utters is "I am Groot". But Rocket Raccoon is able to interpret the subtle nuances with which he says it, and translate for the others.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Avengers Assemble #7 Synopsis by Rob Johnson
Thanos gained control of a Cosmic Cube last issue, and now he uses it to summon (some of) the Elders of the Universe:- Champion, Collector, Contemplator, In-Betweener and Stranger. In revenge for the times they have thwarted him he brought them here so they would know who killed them. And he banishes them from existence. But after that something starts to happen to the Cube.

We left most of the Avengers team and Guardians of the Galaxy (plus a load of Badoon) floating in airless space. Black Widow had been left on the Avengers quinjet. Now she comes to the rescue in a spacesuit. Hulk's been holding his breath. Natasha gives him some more oxygen and sends him to retrieve Thor, who's unconscious after the battle on the Badoon warship. Then she turns to revive Captain America (who was somewhat protected from harm by his super-soldier serum). Meanwhile Guardians in their own spacesuits have rescued Hawkeye and unconscious Iron Man and their own Bug.

Their problems aren't over as more Badoon attack. Hulk wakes Thor, who sets about smashing the aliens and the warship. Hulk joins Cap and Widow in the quinjet. The Guardians Drax, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon and Star-Lord make it back to Star-Lord's ship (piloted by Groot) with their charges. Hawkeye and Iron Man who need advanced medical attention.

Peter Quill uses his gun to expel Badoon from his ship. Hulk leaves the quinjet to help Thor. Star-Lord relays a plan to them, and they fight their way to the Badoon ship's power core, which Thor explodes with a blast from Mjolnir. That'll stop the Badoon for sure.

Cap and Natasha have abandoned the quinjet for Quill's ship, because the quinjet wouldn't be able to outrun the explosion. Hulk and Thor just make it out and are picked up en route. Star-Lord reckons they've really made enemies of the Badoon now! (As if the Guardians hadn't already!)

But their escape route takes them directly to a giant insubstantial Thanos with the Cosmic Cube in the heart of his chest.
