Synopsis

Black Widow (2016 series) #10 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

Black Widow, Winter Soldier, and Weeping Lion take Natasha’s spaceship to the moon. They land at a distance from the Blue Area, not wanting SHIELD to know they have come. Bucky tries to prepare Nat for the man they have come to meet. And then they hear him coming, The Unseen, formerly Nick Fury, now a silent hooded being in chains. Natasha tells The Unseen that she seeks to rescue the half-dozen or so little girls trained to be assassins by the Dark Room and any help he can give her to locate the girls will be appreciated. Weeping Lion (Ilija) wants the secrets in the Unseen’s brain and asks that the telepathic damper they have put on him be removed. The Unseen makes to depart but Ilija grabs his chain to restrain him, demanding his attention. Unseen turns and gives Ilija all the knowledge he seeks. The man is ecstatic about what he learns…right up until his head explodes. Unseen writes a Russian word (“Friendship”) in the moondust and leaves. Then Nat and Bucky see their ship taking off, piloted by a child assassin smuggled along by Ilija. They run for the ship but their oxygen starts to run low, having been sabotaged by the Lion. Nat gives all of her oxygen to Bucky, returning all the favors he has done for her. Bucky reaches the ship, captures the kid and flies out to where Natasha is dying. He applies CPR and, after some dicey moments, she recovers. Their romance rekindles but she intends to drop him off and continue the mission on her own….

Back on Earth, Anya enters the Weeping Lion’s stronghold, murders Ilija’s cousin and frees her little girls for her scheme of revenge….

Black Widow (2016 series) #10 Review by (April 28, 2026)

Review: The normally grounded Black Widow is one of the least likely candidates for a trip to space but here we are. Because of this, the issue has a much different look, a lovely blue moonscape with several exciting sequences including the appearance of The Unseen, Weeping Lion’s gruesome death, and the CPR scene. And an odd supernatural spin on the story to allow Nat to find the information she needs to rescue the girls.

Final note: Oh yeah, a cute romantic cover that has nothing to do with the story inside the issue. Natasha puts a tattoo on Bucky’s metal arm; paint would have been a lot easier.

Comments: The Unseen is the former Nick Fury, replacing Uatu the Watcher who died in the ORIGINAL SIN event; Fury was returned to normal in FANTASTIC FOUR (2018) #25. Final appearances of the Platch Liev/Weeping Lion (both of him). Natasha’s parting line to Bucky, “We’ll always have the Moon” is an echo of CASABLANCA’s “We’ll always have Paris.” Mark Waid credited as co-scripter.
