Synopsis

Black Widow (2016 series) #12 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

At the Friendship base in Antarctica, Anya the new Headmistress strangles Black Widow with a garrote while the six girl assassins stand ready with the six keys that will initiate a self-destruct program that will destroy SHIELD. As the girls watch the clock to turn the keys at exactly twelve, Anya presents Natasha with a choice. All she need do to stop the destruction of SHIELD is to kill one of the girls. Simple. Just like the old days. Natasha readies her Widow’s Bite and…she shoots the clock. And then she leaps and throws the switch that floods the building. Nat swims away but is caught by three girls; she appeals to them, noting that Anya was ready to sacrifice one of them to her game. Anya arrives to argue, demanding the girls make a choice: Anya or Natasha. So Nat pulls a lever that releases the part of the platform that the two women are standing on. As the platform is drawn along by the flood, Nat and Anya fight, the villainess drawing a sword. Nat takes it away from Anya and jams it into the ground as Anya and the platform go over a waterfall. Nat holds on and when the flood subsides she returns along the tunnel where she is rescued by the girls. Anya is there and the two women argue over the fate of the girls. Natasha walks out, giving the girls a chance to choose their own path. The six girls glance at one another then join hands and follow Natasha out into the sunlight….

They encounter the SHIELD personnel from Friendship and Maria Hill who has arrived by helicopter. Hill assures Natasha that she understands Nat was working to protect SHIELD not take them down. Hill then gets a video call from Tony Stark on a beach; Tony explains that he has already found a place in a foster family for each of the girls and then he signs off. Hill tells Nat it’s time to come in from the cold. And Natasha agrees.

Black Widow (2016 series) #12 Review by (May 12, 2026)

Review: A spectacular battle scene centering on a choice for the six girl assassins: Anya or Natasha? And the two options make it clear what will happen to them and so Natasha wins while Anya goes to prison. And the miniseries wraps up with some attractive art and the hint of a break for Black Widow. But no, the next thing on her schedule is the SECRET EMPIRE event where she ends up dead. Ouch.

Comments: Story takes place before the events of CIVIL WAR II #8. Headmistress Anya returns in WEB OF BLACK WIDOW, a few years later. A No-Prize to anyone who can figure out how Anya at the bottom of the waterfall could get back to the girls before Nat. Mark Waid credited as co-scripter. The letters pages include final essays by Chris Samnee, Mark Waid, Matthew Wilson, and Joe Caramagna.
