Synopsis

Black Widow (2016 series) #11 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

Friendship” as revealed by The Unseen last issue is a SHIELD base in the Antarctic, the fail-safe against SHIELD being overrun. With the turning of some keys, all of SHIELD’s data and resources will be destroyed instantly and permanently. Black Widow is there, impersonating an inspector from the main office. And suddenly, six girl assassins enter via the ventilation system and Natasha takes them on. A girl grabs one key from the official there and they zip away. The key is one of six needed to activate the fail-safe, each one held by a staffer, to be turned simultaneously (hence, six girls). Nat suggests they evacuate the base as she fights a girl, easily taking down the overconfident kid. Nat moves through the installation, dueling with the girls and eventually knocking out four more at once and recovering the stolen keys. She finds the remaining girl in the control room, holding a staffer hostage. Nat draws a gun and shoots through the man’s arm to hit the girl in the head. Nat takes the last key and finds the girl is not injured, due to her costume. Then Nat is clobbered from behind and sees Anya, declaring herself the new Headmistress. The girls recover the keys and put them into the six slots in the control room, ready to turn them and destroy SHIELD….

Black Widow (2016 series) #11 Review by (May 6, 2026)

Review: This issue raises the stakes for the battle between Natasha and Headmistress Anya but the real treasure is the lovely art, showing Natasha’s pursuit of the six girl assassins and the fight that moves through the base. It resembles a dance, wordless for the most part, with nice use of colors. An impressive issue and ending on a scary cliffhanger—assuming that the destruction of SHIELD, that ultra-fascist spy organization, would be a disaster. Maria Hill isn’t exactly a good guy, ya know.

Comments: Anya (Recluse) makes her first appearance as the new Headmistress. Mark Waid credited as co-scripter.
