Bucky Barnes: the Winter Soldier #1 Review by (October 10, 2014)
Review: Well, that cover tells us what to expect here: it’s a homage to TOTAL RECALL, a Philip K. Dick story brought to life. And that’s what we have: our spy/assassin hero is transposed to an unlikely sci-fi setting with a lot of tongue-in-cheek adventure, channeling PK Dick, Dr Who, and the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Ales Kot keeps the whole thing light and amusing. The art by Marco Rudy is quite unusual, a swirling phantasmagoria of dark watercolor images in strange panel layouts, where it’s not always easy to discern what is going on. I did the best I could with the synopsis and it is subject to change if something is explained in a future issue. For now, it’s interesting enough to come back for the second issue, we’ll have to see.

Comments: ORIGINAL SIN revealed that Nick Fury was the “Man on the Wall,” protecting Earth from cosmic threats; Bucky inherited the job at the end of the miniseries. Bucky refers to the best steak dinner Nick Fury ever had in ORIGINAL SIN #1. If “the Sacred Reznor” is some sort of joke reference to Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, I don’t get it.

Bucky Barnes: the Winter Soldier #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

On the planet Syro, Bucky Barnes is a prisoner, their ruler pronouncing him guilty of harboring killing thoughts, and sentencing him to transfiguration, having his mind transferred into the Sacred Reznor, a harmless animal resembling an aardvark. Instead SHIELD Agent Daisy Johnson fires a vibranium bullet from the other side of the planet, killing the ruler; Bucky calmly frees himself and leaves the confused natives with the advice to establish a democracy…

In a mysterious darkened room, a mysterious figure mutters mysteriously while working on a mysterious project. No further explanations offered….

Back at Nick Fury’s secret satellite station, Bucky, the new "Man on the Wall," protects Earth from cosmic threats. He is trying to talk Daisy into being his permanent partner but she is reluctant. They head to the Herzog Station to dine on Thai-Skrull fusion cuisine where they continue to kick around his proposal and also Daisy discovers that Bucky has rescued the Sacred Reznor and is concealing it in his coat….

On the planet Mer-z-bow, Princess Ventolin and her counselor Rossz Csillag witness the birth of a new world in a white hole. She wants to abdicate the throne but Rossz is worried about anarchy in the kingdom; she prefers to look at it as keeping the system fluid and adaptable….

Bucky then teams up with Namor the Sub-Mariner to defeat a gang of underwater drug smugglers. Namor seizes the illium, a sedative which can destroy the mind. Bucky questions a captive who claims that Loki is their boss and that if captured to say "The lost glove is happy." Then Bucky is shot by another spacesuit-clad gunman a good distance away….
