Synopsis

Captain America/Iron Man #2 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

On the trail of Veronica Eden, Captain America and Iron Man meet the Paladins, a new superteam featuring Pioneer, Vox, Prima Donna, and Think Tank, formerly of the Fifty-State Initiative. They were after Fifty-One, the alien member of the team who has gone rogue and wanted a favor from Eden. They do know that Fifty-One wants Myrmidon, a robot created and defeated by Tony Stark, which was the muscle for the super-computer called Overseer. The Paladins apologize to Cap and Shellhead for messing up their operation; they make it clear they do not want the two Avengers’ help in recapturing their buddy….

The Paladins trace Fifty-One and Veronica Eden to a secret SHIELD storage facility in Upstate New York. And Cap and Iron Man follow the Paladins. The two Avengers enter the facility, easily punch their way through the guards and confront their quarry. Fifty-One has donned the Hydra Supreme armor (from SECRET EMPIRE) and Eden has Doc Ock’s tentacles, Scorpion’s tail and is riding a Goblin Glider. And then Fifty-One takes off on his mission, leaving Eden to fight alone. She does a pretty good job of holding off Cap and Iron Man and the Paladins when they arrive but eventually the assembled heroes overpower her….

Eight miles above Minneapolis, the revived Myrmidon brings Overseer back online….

Captain America/Iron Man #2 Review by (January 5, 2022)

Review: The second issue is just as entertaining as the first, with much of the humor coming from the villain of the piece, Veronica Eden, who sees herself in her narration as just a poor misunderstood little girl. Various conversations between Steve and Tony have an illuminating effect on their lengthy friendship as well as explaining why the Fifty-State Initiative (remember that?) failed. And kudos to the writer for bringing back a one-shot menace from over fifty years ago. I didn’t remember him and I’ll bet no one else (over a certain age) did either, much less anyone born since that issue. And Alex Ross gives us the shiniest Iron Man ever on that cover.

Comments: Myrmidon first and last appeared in IRON MAN #29 way back in 1970 along with its master Overseer.
