Synopsis

Captain America #25 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

The Falcon has apparently sacrificed his life to ensure that Arnim Zola’s Omega Bomb detonates in the stratosphere. As he plummets to Earth, Iron Man catches him and lowers him softly to the ground. All of his friends and comrades mourn….

Zola tells his daughter Jet Black that he has always loved her and asks her to return with him to Dimension Z, telling her that these people are not her allies. As Steve Rogers and Sharon Carter are reunited, the Avengers discover that Sam is alive after all, the brunt of the blast being absorbed by his new Vibranium wings. Jet rushes into his arms but Sharon accuses her of plotting with her father against them. Enraged, Jet rushes off to Zola’s tower, Ian Rogers following her and begging her to come back. Too late, she rejoins her father on the return to Dimension Z, the heroes surprised at the turn of events, Sam most of all….

One week later all living Avengers past and present congregate at Avengers Mansion for a special event. Hawkeye jokes around and trades barbs with various comrades. The aged Steve Rogers announces that he can no longer be Captain America, so he will be taking the position of mission coordinator. He then introduces Sam Wilson as the new Captain America. There’s only one thing left: Steve presents Sam with the shield and Sam hoists it high and shouts “Avengers Assemble!”

Epilogue: A mysterious cloaked figure arrives at Castle Hydra for a high-level meeting. The newcomer is an Avenger turned traitor; he reveals the weaknesses of the new Captain America to Chancellor Cassandra and her sinister agent The Drain as they plot to subvert the new Cap….

Avenger cameos: Hawkeye, Hulk, Rogue, Scarlet Witch, She-Hulk, Spider-Man, Sunfire, Thor, Vision, Wasp

Review / Commentaries

Captain America #25 Review by (October 5, 2014)
Review: There’s a new Cap in town and Marvel makes a big production out it, complete with silly attempts at humor by various heroes! Yeah, the cover still pretends it’s a mystery even though we’ve all known for months who the new Cap is. So in this final issue of the volume the Arnim Zola plot wraps up and heads into the shadows to be pulled out again when the writer decides to truly finish it off (this is the lamest bit with fake conflicts and a repeat of Tony’s experience with a nuclear weapon at the climax of the Avengers movie). And so we move on to the big event, a fancy introduction. However we don’t see much of Sam in his new role-and wait…does he have Falcon wings attached to the redesigned Cap suit? This will be weird. And all that remains is to show us the Hydra villains who will be making Sam Cap’s life miserable over the next few issues. Tune in next time to find out about the ALL-NEW CAPTAIN AMERICA!

Comments: First appearance of Sam Wilson as Captain America. Every living Avenger appears in the story but to keep those characters list from becoming too long I limited it only to those who play a significant part in the tale. Hydra agents Madam Worm, and The Drain were introduced in WINTER SOLDIER: THE BITTER MARCH; Cassandra previously appeared in SILVER SABLE #11-12. Issue includes a six-page preview of ALL-NEW CAPTAIN AMERICA #1 and CAPTAIN AMERICA AND THE MIGHTY AVENGERS #1.
