Synopsis

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #5 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars
Iron Man takes the newly-revived Captain America on a tour of New York to revisit old sites. Cap is moved by the discovery that Ebbets Field, home of the Brooklyn Dodgers, was demolished in 1960, leading Shellhead to having second thoughts about how well Cap will adjust to the new world. Cap is accosted by a group of older men who assume he is a younger man taking up the mantle of the great World War 2 hero, telling him he isn’t worthy to wear the uniform. A panic draws the two heroes to the site of a cadre of armored giants, wreaking havoc and hypnotizing people with eye beams. Iron Man goes into action, telling Cap to protect the civilians, hoping to protect the old and clearly outclassed hero. But Cap has leapt into the fray, managing to defeat some of the foe with his flying shield and acrobatic skill. An enemy grabs Iron Man by the foot, crushing his flight gyro, and hurls him into the path of an oncoming bus. Cap’s shield flies through the air coming between the two and stopping the hapless Shellhead from destroying the vehicle. Cap announces the civilians on the bus are okay. Iron Man rips open an enemy and discovers that they are robots, sent by the alien race responsible for Gargantus. Warning Cap about their hypnotic powers, Iron Man is seized by the monsters and enslaved…and ordered to eliminate Captain America....

Synopsis

By Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars
A gray-haired man named Buck Jones is locked in a cell in an asylum, claiming to be Captain America and shouting government secrets to prove his identity. The surprise is—he really is Captain America, undercover on a SHIELD mission. Cap recalls the events that brought him there…Nick Fury told him about the case of Randall Jefferson, an ordinary shoe salesman who suddenly started spouting classified government intel and was subsequently committed to the asylum. Fury had sent in esper agents and they ended up similarly afflicted from exposure to Jefferson. He decided the strong-willed Cap should be sent in incognito to unravel the mystery before enemy agents can abduct the patient, and also serve as additional bait. Talking to Jefferson, Cap discovers that the patient knows even the secret details of Cap’s origin. A woman doctor draws an energy weapon and shoots "Jones" in the back, seizes Jefferson and escapes. Cap, saved by his shield on his back under the straightjacket, dons his costume and sets off in pursuit. Cap meets up with the doctor and apprehends her and she is totally surprised. Cap then spots an orderly sneaking away, giving Cap a clue as to who he is up against. Following the orderly Cap comes upon a doctor who has been assaulted but as soon as the hero’s back is turned the "doctor" tries to shoot him, but Cap seizes the weapon causing it to explode in the villain’s face. To Cap’s horror, the face burns off, exposing his foe as…the Chameleon. Cap pursues his foe to Corridor Six where he receives a shock: it is the violent ward of the insane asylum...and the villain has released all the dangerous inmates….

Review / Commentaries

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #5 Review by (August 31, 2010)
Comments: Issue is designed to resemble a TALES OF SUSPENSE offering, down to the split Iron Man/Cap cover. Both stories conclude in the next issue. Iron Man’s encounter with Gargantus was way back in TALES OF SUSPENSE #40—his second appearance. Second story: Buck Jones (Cap’s alias) was a cowboy hero of the 1930s.
