Synopsis

Captain Marvel #7 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
In this series Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) and young thief Yuna Yang are now linked by the Nega-Bands of Captain Marvel (Genis-Vell) with 1 of them in the Negative Zone and the other in the positive universe, such that as usual they can swap places via the Bands. Cosmic being the Undone seeks to consume Carol and the Bands for energy, and has turned Yuna's friend Leonore into 1 of her Omens to this end. The Undone has killed Genis and resurrected him as another of her servants.

Last issue Carol recruited her 'family' Hulking & Wiccan, her Kree half-sister Lauri-Ell and Phyla-Vell (a Captain Marvel from an alternate timeline) to help. Yuna brought sedated Leonore to her Neg Zone base but it turned out the Undone had control of that part of the NZ and has severed the connection between her and Carol so they can't swap places.

Leonore starts to turn back into Omen and Yuna can't remove the ring which links her to Undone. So she slaps some of her facial recognition camouflage strips onto both their faces and they (miraculously) become undetectable by the foe. Back on Earth Genis-Vell recovers from the beating he took last issue. He still has the gaping hole in his chest and multiple eyes on his body, and Undone speaks through him. He also has Accuser Lauri-Ell's Universal Weapon. Undone offers to trade Yuna for Carol but CM doesn't trust the foe to actually let Yuna go. so she tells wizard Wiccan (Billy Kaplan) to trap Genis in a shrunken dimensionally-folded bubble which Carol carries as they all fly to her parents' summer home in Harpswell Sound, Maine.

The basement is filled with tech that she won on a bet with Tony Stark. She leaves Billy and Lauri to guard Genis while Phyla and Teddy Altman (Hulking) keep searching the files that Yuna's criminal family provided for something to fix the Nega-Bands and/or Genis. She herself is off to Rick Jones' apartment in New York.

Rick and Genis have their own Nega-Band swapping going on (since the recent Genis-Vell mini-series that restored their connection) but the other end of their swap is in the Microverse. Genis was killed in the apartment (in #1), and the place is a wreck due to that battle. Carol finds Rick who says he was in the Microverse when he lost his connection to Genis, and he's only now found his own way back to Earth (how?). Carol explains what happened and she thinks he may be the only 1 who can bring Genis back to himself.

When Rick sees the captive Genis he is shocked at his state, but Genis says he's happy because he transcended. But he then contradicts himself by blaming Rick for not being there to help when he got killed. And then with the Undone's help he breaks out of his prison, still in possession of the Universal Weapon. Everyone, including Rick, piles on him and Rick keeps on trying to talk his friend round. Until eventually the combined assault downs Genis, and Wiccan cages him again.

Meanwhile Yuna is fleeing through the Neg Zone with still-unconscious Leonore in her arms. And they're being chased by Omens. They reach a place she was aiming for, a crystal energy beacon which she whacks so that it gives off a light which repels the Omens.

Research has come up with a ritual to cleanse the Nega-Bands of the Undone's influence. It needs every member of the families of both Bands-wearers Carol and Yuna. Carol has her 'family', including Genis-Vell, here so they call in Yuna's relatives plus Carol's surviving half-brother Joe Danvers. They perform the ritual, and at the same time Yuna is fighting Omens in the Neg Zone. It works and the Bands fall free from Carol's arms, signalling that the Undone's influence is gone.

Now Carol puts the cleansed Bands back on her wrists and intends to go rescue Yuna. But before she can the hole in Genis' chest 'blossoms' wider. He dies and the Undone emerges on Earth.

Captain Marvel #7 Review by (April 20, 2024)
I'm not sure about the latest connection between Rick Jones and Genis-Vell. At the end of the Destiny War (in the Avengers: Forever limited series) Rick and Genis were trapped in the same relationship as Rick had previously had with his father Mar-Vell, 1 in the 616 universe and 1 elsewhere, with the ability to swap places using the Nega-Bands. But it turned out that elsewhere was the Microverse as opposed to the Negative Zone for Mar-Vell. The pair got separated at the end of their 2002 series. Genis got killed as Photon in Thunderbolts #100. He got better in Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) (2019) #33-36 and then re-merged with Rick at the end of the Genis-Vell: Captain Marvel mini-series, though it wasn't made clear wher they were swapping to this time. However in this issue Rick *was* in the Microverse but he says he was on vacation.

Joe Danvers Jr is the only surviving son of Carol's father Joe Sr. He's mainly been seen in flashbacks apart from Ms Marvel (2006) #31 and the Life Of Captain Marvel (2018) mini-series, and now here. In LOCM Marie Danvers, mother of Carol but not of Joe and dead brother Stevie, was revealed to be Kree Mari-Ell also mother of Lauri-Ell. Joe Sr and Marie are dead.
