Carnage USA #1 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Doverton, Colorado, a typical small town in America's heartland, until... At the meat packing plant Cletus Kasady eats all the meat in sight, giving him the power he needs to unleash Carnage. Soon, Carnage sends a message to the outside world, carved into the body of the local sheriff: he declares Doverton the capital of a sovereign symbiotic state, planning to take over the world. An Avengers team is summoned—Captain America, Spider-Man, Hawkeye, Wolverine, and the Thing—and dispatched to Doverton....

When the Avengers arrive they find the residents standing still and smiling, terrified of disobeying their new master. Kasady confronts the heroes, suddenly shooting out tendrils and immediately taking over Cap, Hawkeye, Logan and Ben, leaving only Spider-Man free....

The US Emergency Response Center sees the heroes' communicators go dark and prepares to implement their contingency plan....

Review / Commentaries

Carnage USA #1 Review by (May 8, 2018)

Review: Wells and Crain follow up their creepy CARNAGE with this sequel as the monstrous symbiote terrorizes a small Midwestern town. Crain's acrylic paintings are still unnerving but the brighter look diffuses some of the terror. But only some. We still have a Carnage baby, Carnage zoo animals, and worse, Carnage Avengers (though they don't really contribute all that much beyond giving the reader the chills down the spine). Patriotic references appear frequently on the covers and in the titles but don't really play that great a part in the story. Like the first miniseries, this is pure nightmare fuel.

Comments: The cover shows Carnage literally wrapping himself in an American flag, an idiom used for a politician trying to present himself as patriotic. Title refers to Woody Guthrie's folk song, “This Land is Your Land.” Kasady's scary quote, “That'll do, pig, that'll do” is from the movie BABE where it has a less sinister meaning.
