No Vault Insurance!

Synopsis

Damage Control #1 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Thor holds up a collapsing George Washington Bridge until Damage Control can find a way to shore it up. Lenny offers him some Ben-Gay....

Back at the DC headquarters, sexy receptionist Anne presents intern Bart with a going away gift and a kiss; he spends the rest of the issue mooning over her....

Boss lady Mrs Hoag has a call from the President (“Of what?” she asks), appointing her to the Commission on Superhuman Activities. She calls Robin Chapel into her office and names her the new Chief of Operations; Robin is so convinced she was going to be fired that she doesn't hear a word Mrs Hoag said. Mrs Hoag meets with her business partners Tony Stark and Wilson Fisk to tell them she is leaving. They have some news for her: they've sold out to Carlton Co....

Meanwhile, there has been a jail break at the Vault, prison for supervillains; the Warden calls the Avengers for help but accidentally dials Damage Control. The unwitting John Porter and Gene Strausser are sent out there, accompanied by Bart, and run straight into the menacing Rattler. After this they are taken hostage by the Wrecking Crew—but John had helped Thunderball earlier (DC vol. 1 #1) and 'Ball owes him a favor so when Wrecker shows off, John claims to have superpowers—and when the lights go out, Thunderball clobbers his pals and when the lights come back on, John takes the credit. When the Crew breaks out they are facing Captain America who takes out Piledriver and Bulldozer but Thunderball clouts Cap (he IS a bad guy, remember) and he and Wrecker get away....

Robin accompanies John, Gene, and Bart on their trip back to HQ and she fills them in on the big changes that have taken place, including moving to Carlton Co.'s big skyscraper built around the Flatiron....

Review / Commentaries

Damage Control #1 Review by (October 8, 2019)

Review: Aaaand DC is back with their second limited series. Okay issue has a number of bright spots, especially with the three good guys trapped in the prison with the bad guys. Grouping the scenes for the purpose of the synopsis diffuses some of the comedy though. Ernie Colon's art seems a bit off but it doesn't hurt the issue much. I especially like the sequence with the menacing Rattler...who is only looking for the men's room—and John tells him but only so they can get away. PS: A No-Prize to anyone who knows why Cap is slouching like an ape on the cover.

Comments: Issue bannered “Acts of Vengeance,” a crossover series of the time. The new owner is one Michael Souris, which is Yiddish (more or less) for “aggravating trouble.” Title is a pun on “no-fault insurance.” Issue includes profiles of Gene Strausser and Mrs Hoag.
