Synopsis

Daredevil (1964 series) #176 synopsis by Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 5 stars

A homeless man finds and is killed by Kirigi, still with his sword through his abdomen. He stumbles through the streets, coming upon an abandoned church, where he stays to meditate and heal. A few days later, Heather finds a depressed Daredevil sitting in the rain. Feeling useless without his radar, he determines to get it back somehow. He mentions his old mentor named Stick, the man who originally taught him to cope with his blindness and heightened other senses, and sets out to find him, nearly slipping and falling right away. This recklessness sends Heather into a spiral, worrying that Matt’s going to get himself killed and leave her all alone. Ultimately though, she determines she has to help him find Stick.

Heather sets out, unknowingly being watched by Elektra, who in turn is being stalked by Kirigi. Daredevil finds Turk at Josie’s to ask him about Stick. Without his radar, Daredevil is hit from behind but before Turk can kill him, Josie tells him to do it outside. They take Daredevil outside, where he gets a second wind and takes out Turk and the others, the rain acting as a subpar substitute for his radar. Daredevil heads out but Turk noticed that something seemed up with him and plans to track Stick down as well to find him. Meanwhile, at a pool hall, Heather pays a guy to take her to Stick, even pulling a gun on him when he tries getting fresh with her. Elsewhere yet again, Turk breaks into the Cord Conglomerate in order to steal one of the Mauler armors, figuring it’ll give him the edge he needs against Daredevil.

Meanwhile, Daredevil interrogates two guys and finds out that Wall-Eyed Pike might know where Stick is. The two guys notice Daredevil almost slip when he heads off and figure they can take the opportunity to shoot him. Elektra kills the two guys before they can shoot Matt, as Kirigi continues to hunt her, deciding the time is not yet right to strike. We then find Wall-Eyed Pike at his apartment, complaining about how Stick swindled him out of money. Elektra comes through the window and persuades Pike to tell her where Stick is. He tells her Stick is at a pool hall called Duke’s. No later has Elektra left than Turk, in the Mauler armor, breaks down Pike’s wall asking about Stick as well. Immediately after Turk leaves, Daredevil comes through another window, and Pike once again tells that Stick is at Duke’s. Frustrated, Pike packs up to leave town, when he finds Heather at his door, preemptively telling her about Duke’s, while breaking down in frustration.

At Duke’s, we find the very man everyone has been looking for, a blind old man named Stick. He hustles some guys out of some money, but before they can do anything, Heather and Daredevil simultaneously arrive from opposite directions. Daredevil takes down the guys who were planning to attack Stick, who says he could’ve handled them just fine himself. Before Daredevil can tell Stick why he needs his help, Turk breaks down the wall. The Mauler armor does him no good, and Daredevil effortlessly takes him out anyway. Elektra watches from outside and Kirigi has decided the time is now right to attack. The two engage in yet another epic fight, with Elektra doing all she can to fend him off. She ducks into a warehouse, and runs Kirigi over with a truck, knocking the both of them off the pier and into the water. She crawls out and Kirigi does as well not long after, engulfed in flames. She takes his sword and decapitates him, ending the fight for good. Elektra then muses what she’ll do if she’s forced to kill Daredevil to protect herself, and a chill runs through her, colder than the wind.

Daredevil (1964 series) #176 Review by (March 19, 2025)

Review: Once again, Miller adds yet more enduring changes to Daredevil with the debut of his old, blind mentor Stick. This rewrites his history yet again, introducing the man who taught him to deal with his blindness and his heightened senses, fleshing out his backstory once more. Daredevil spends the issue hunting down Stick, thinking he can help him get back his missing radar. His journey causes Heather and Turk to also look for Stick, while Elektra follows Matt, and Kirigi follows her. This makes the title very apt as everyone in the issue ends up hunting each other to ultimately find Stick. This culminates in one of my favorite humorous scenes in Daredevil, especially during Miller’s run, in which every character ends up crashing Wall-Eyed Pike’s apartment asking about Stick right after each other. By the time Daredevil gets there, he barely has to ask (“Stick?” “Stick.” “Duke’s.”) and when Heather gets there he just breaks down. Who says that Daredevil comics can’t be funny?

Everyone eventually tracks down Stick, mostly at the same time again. This leads to another pretty funny scene, in which Daredevil effortlessly takes out Turk, even with the Mauler armor, though Turk’s role is usually more comic relief anyway. Just as I teased last issue, Elektra and Kirigi have yet another epic showdown for the ages to close out the issue. She runs him over with a truck and eventually decapitates him (off-panel enough to not be too violent for the censors). The fight is epically drawn, naturally, and completely wordless for maximum effect. Given the Hand’s M.O., this won’t be the last time we see Kirigi (though he doesn’t have as many appearances as you’d think, all during the Miller run). Overall, another classic introducing an important supporting character, with all the epic action you could want and a surprising amount of perfectly blended humor.

Comments: First appearance of Stick.
