Synopsis

Daredevil (1964 series) #190 synopsis by Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 5 stars

In a flashback prologue, having left Matt some time ago, Elektra trudges through an oppressive snowy wind. She attempts to climb an impossible cliff wall she learned about from her sensei. Try as she might, her drive is not enough and she ends up falling from the cliff. She is found by the members of the Chaste and she decides she wants to train with them. After training with the Chaste for a year, Stick realizes that Elektra still has too much rage and hate in her heart and he kicks her out. Elektra returns to her sensei who bids her to find a new path for her life. Elektra instead feels she needs to prove herself to Stick and plans to do so by infiltrating the Hand to take them apart from within. She is soon found and recruited by The Hand who subject her to a test before she can join their ranks. She jumps down into a pit and quickly kills a mystery opponent, only to realize when the pit is illuminated that she just unwittingly killed her former sensei! Elektra feels sorrow and shock, as she begins the dark path she has chosen.

In the present, Stone explains to Daredevil that Elektra served the Hand for awhile before striking out on her own, though her time with the Hand did indeed corrupt her, as Stick feared. Now, Daredevil and Stone head to prevent the Hand from absconding with Elektra’s body, finding them with her already dug up. The Hand spring their trap, revealing more of their numbers lying in wait and the two find themselves surrounded. Daredevil and Stone spring a trap of their own, as Black Widow throws down several tear gas grenades from high in a tree. Daredevil suddenly hears a helicopter arriving, with Stone just barely too slow to prevent it getting away with Elektra’s body. Elsewhere, a lone hitman sneaks his way into the Kingpin’s office, killing several guards in the process. Kingpin quickly subdues the man and learns he’s working for Injun Joe, another of the mob bosses, before killing him. This lets Fisk know that a mutiny is in the works, as he ponders how best to deal with this situation.

Back at the cemetery, Daredevil sets out to get help in locating the Hand’s hideout, leaving a worried Natasha and Stone. Nastasha is worried about Matt in general while Stone fears that Matt’s love for Elektra may prevent him from doing what needs to be done. Daredevil meets with the Kingpin to ask for his help in finding the Hand. Fisk agrees, as long as Daredevil helps him in return by taking out those who would wish to dethrone him. Soon enough, Daredevil finds himself outside Injun Joe’s hideout, casually knocking out Turk before he heads in. Daredevil takes out Fisk’s competition and is rewarded with the address Fisk found for the Hand’s whereabouts, an abandoned church.

At said church, the Hand begin the process to resurrect Elektra before they’re interrupted by the arrival of Daredevil and Stone. Stone sets fire to the church to disorient the Hand, while Black Widow deals with the Hand archers waiting in the rafters, taking an arrow in the shoulder in the process. Daredevil and Stone approach Elektra’s body when Daredevil hears a heartbeat coming from her for just a moment! Stone becomes occupied with the Hand, pleading for Daredevil to help him while Daredevil tries to use the Chaste’s technique to restore Elektra! Daredevil tries to heed Stick’s words and move energy back into Elektra’s body but ends up collapsing from the strain, simply not knowing how it’s done. When all seems lost, Daredevil, Stone, and Black Widow are saved by a group of the Kingpin’s men! They drag Daredevil and Black Widow outside leaving Stone inside to dispose of Elektra’s body for good. However, just as he’s about to finish it, Stone realizes that in trying to revive Elektra, Matt somehow purified her! He realizes Elektra is now clean, and he has grown weary…

Outside, Kingpin confronts a confused Daredevil about why he saved him. Fisk points out that in taking out Injun Joe, Daredevil has proven himself a common enemy that Fisk can use to maintain order against. He also points out that when in desperate need of help, Daredevil came to him rather than the police, proving that they need each other, in a strange way. He drives off and Daredevil and Black Widow realize Stone isn’t there. They run back into the burning building to find both Stone and Elektra gone. Daredevil makes his own conclusions, while Natasha finds Stone’s empty outfit and throws it in the fire, deigning not to tell Matt. Epilogue: a lone figure attempts once more to scale a cliff wall long thought impossible. Though the climb is long and taxing, the figure makes it to the top. The figure removes their jacket, revealing Elektra, alive and well once more, ready to take hold of her new destiny!

Daredevil (1964 series) #190 Review by (July 9, 2025)

Review: Elektra is resurrected in yet another all-time classic issue! No beating around the bush, this is the issue that brings Elektra back to life! This means that her entire history so far from her introduction to her death to now her resurrection only took a little over 20 issues! That’s quite a journey for such a relatively short period, and it’ll be a bit before anyone but Miller uses her in any capacity. The issue is bookended nicely by Elektra trying to climb a seemingly unclimbable cliff, used as your standard metaphor for completeness, self-actualization, renewal, etc., especially when she succeeds the second time. We also learn more about Elektra’s history, establishing that she trained with the Chaste for a bit before moving on to join the Hand. It should be noted that her intentions were altruistic, as she initially planned to infiltrate the Hand to take them out, before being corrupted. The exact details of when and how long she trained with both the Chaste and the Hand will change practically constantly, as no two retellings seem to agree on all the details.

Daredevil and Kingpin’s antagonistic relationship also deepens in an interesting way. They make a deal with each other, with Fisk helping DD find the Hand if DD takes out another mob boss who was planning a mutiny. In a scene reminiscent of the interrogation scene in The Dark Knight, Fisk makes the claim that he and Daredevil need each other, in a strange way. Daredevil presents an enemy that Fisk can use to maintain control against, while because of that same control Daredevil ultimately went to him when he desperately needed help. While it may seem standard with many hero/villain pairings today, this brought some layers to their relationship that not all had at the time. In fact, this weird measure of respect they have for each other and status quo of begrudgingly tolerating each other will last (very off and on) to this day (with some notable exceptions). Overall, a positively phenomenal penultimate issue of Miller’s initial run. The art is top-notch, the writing is impeccable, and the themes are poetic, a perfect encapsulation of Miller’s impact on the franchise.

Comments: Special double-length issue. Elektra resurrected. Death of Stone. Elektra’s past history with the Chaste is established, in addition to the Hand.
