Synopsis

Daredevil (1964 series) #199 synopsis by reviewer Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Matt Murdock awakens to Yuriko rushing him out of their shelter due to an earthquake. Matt then suffers another headache and simultaneously Bullseye suffers one as well, being able to tell that Daredevil is less than a mile away. As Bullseye works out a bit after his surgery, he asks Lord Dark Wind why he did all of this. Dark Wind admits that Japan’s Minister of Trade will be in New York soon and he wants Bullseye to assassinate him. Dark Wind sees him as a symbol of the “New Japan”, a notion that Japan has become little more than a merchant country. He despises this, feeling that Japan as gone soft, buying their conquests when they used to be warriors. Dark Wind readies his archers and swordsmen to deal with Daredevil while he plans to send Bullseye back to the U.S.

Meanwhile, Matt and Yuriko find the entrance to Dark Wind’s stronghold and Yuriko asks Matt to promise not to harm Kira. The two don’t get very far when they’re attacked by the three warriors Matt fought last issue. Matt quickly takes them out again, noting how they’re all clearly sick from pneumonia. Yuriko notes their undying loyalty to her father, a notion which she doesn’t share, but unfortunately Kira does. Speaking of, Kira asks Dark Wind to let him be of service and Dark Wind tasks him with getting Bullseye back to the mainland and on a plane. Elsewhere, Matt asks Yuriko about her scar, and she explains that it’s somehow connected to her father’s fateful survival of his plane crash, the true meaning known only to him. Matt and Yuriko are then attacked Dark Wind’s archers and Matt refuses to run. They all take aim and fire and Matt stuns them by catching their arrows out of the air, causing them to flee in fear!

Back at Dark Wind’s stronghold, Bullseye asks what he’s being paid for this assassination job and Dark Wind states that it is to be repayment for restoring him to health. Matt and Yuriko then reach Dark Wind’s inner temple where they’re confronted by Dark Wind’s swordsmen. Matt takes out the first one and Yuriko takes his sword, refusing to run and hide. Meanwhile, Bullseye and Kira head out on a boat for the mainland. When Bullseye admits he has no plans to follow Dark Wind’s request, now that he knows he’s not getting paid, Kira moves to retaliate and Bullseye throws a bottle at him, knocking him into the ocean. Back at the temple, Matt changes to Daredevil while taking out the other swordsmen, with a little more difficulty due to the returned earthquake messing with his senses. Daredevil takes out a couple more guys inside, when the earthquake causes the roof to cave in on him! Now trapped, Daredevil is left defenseless as Dark Wind approaches. Just before he can strike Daredevil down, he in turn is killed by Yuriko. Later, Kira washes up on shore and he and Yuriko reunite, parting ways with Daredevil for good. To be continued!

Daredevil (1964 series) #199 Review by (September 17, 2025)

Review: A very action focused issue as this storyline reaches its climax! Daredevil spends a lot of the issue fighting various henchman of Dark Wind, archers, swordsmen, etc. as he and Yuriko make their way through his stronghold. The archer encounter is particularly cool, as Matt just catches their arrows out of the air, which scares them so much they run! Daredevil doesn’t get to fight Lord Dark Wind himself though, as he ends up getting killed by Yuriko. Though the issue ends with things seeming hopeful for her, this will ultimately end up putting her on a much darker path. Bullseye’s also good as new again, leading to him and Daredevil finally encountering each other again in the finale to this story next issue. Which is good, there’s been a lot of issues now of Bullseye not really doing anything. You’d think he would’ve stuck around to fight Daredevil here, especially if he was going to betray Dark Wind anyway, but alas their big reunion won’t occur until next issue back in New York, as the Japan section of this storyline comes to a close.

Comments: Death of Lord Dark Wind. The objects Bullseye uses as weapons in this issue include a shuriken, a spear, a sai, and a bottle. Yuriko’s next appearance will be in Alpha Flight #33, where she first encounters Wolverine as Lady Deathstrike.
