Synopsis

Daredevil (1964 series) #187 synopsis by Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Daredevil once again has his senses go haywire while he’s high over the city causing him to fall and land rather ungracefully in an alley. He theorizes that it’s a result of the radiation he absorbed recently, the same kind that gave him his hyper-senses in the first place. He then decides to go looking for the only man who can help him once again: Stick! Meanwhile, Black Widow encounters a few Hand ninja while they’re in the process of stealing Kirigi’s body from the city morgue. She’d been tasked by SHIELD to track them across several countries, finally finding them making their move now. She stylishly takes out as many ninja as she can but a couple still escape with Kirigi’s body after she steps on the caltrops they threw as a distraction. She alerts Nick Fury as to the situation before revealing that she thinks the caltrops were poisoned, collapsing right after!

Elsewhere, Daredevil visits Duke’s Pool Hall looking for Stick. He’s told Stick’s moved his business to Josie’s before his senses act up again. He’s forced to flee while being followed by a couple goons looking to capitalize on his clear misfortune. Speaking of Josie’s, Stick himself is attacked by four Hand ninja right outside the bar. He takes them all out with no problem. Daredevil continues to head to Josie’s and finds himself facing his most daunting task yet: crossing the street! While he’s halfway across the street, the sounds all around him become deafening once more and he’s caught by the thugs following him. DD is saved by a cabbie who notices the fracas and hits one of the guys from behind with a metal pipe. Daredevil knocks out the other guy and the cabbie offers to give DD a ride to where he’s going.

At SHIELD headquarters, Nick Fury converses with the doctor who looked over Natasha. He says that whatever poison was in the caltrops she stepped on is rapidly killing her, estimating she’s got a week at most. Fury then decides to relay the bad news to Natasha himself. Daredevil arrives at Josie’s and finds out Stick isn’t there. However, once again his hyper-senses go wild at the worst time. The thugs in the bar capitalize on the situation and Daredevil ends up getting thrown out of Josie’s window! Meanwhile, Stick has called a meeting with the other members of the Chaste in Matt’s apartment of all places. He warns them that the Hand is hunting them down and he feels Daredevil could be useful, in time. Just then, Daredevil stumbles in and collapses, asking for Stick’s help. Finally, in an abandoned church, the Hand perform a ritual that brings Kirigi back to life, telling him there are many he must kill! To be continued!

Daredevil (1964 series) #187 Review by (June 11, 2025)

Review: Once again, Daredevil’s powers are out of whack and just like last time, he goes looking for Stick to help him. He runs into some trouble along the way, leading to a few embarrassing experiences. He gets beat up twice, getting saved by a cabbie in the middle of the street the first time, and the second he’s thrown through Josie’s window (for a unique change of pace)! It feels a bit like a retread of last time, though with more embarrassing moments for Daredevil. Black Widow guest stars and she and Stick both have pretty cool fights against the Hand, with Natasha’s even drawn pretty much entirely in silhouette. Stick fares much better, as Natasha gets fatally poisoned, giving her only a week to live! Gee, I wonder if that’ll stick? We’re also introduced to the other members of the Chaste, Stick’s associates and the enemies of the Hand, though only in shadow. The name Chaste also won’t show up for quite a while, though they’ll be individually named next issue. The Hand also first demonstrate their ability to revive the dead (that’ll be important soon) when they bring Kirigi back to life to sic on their enemies! Overall, a good issue setting up more Hand stuff that doesn’t go particularly well for Daredevil or Black Widow!

Comments: First appearance of the other members of the Chaste (Stone, Shaft, and Claw) though they won’t be named as such until next issue. Kirigi is brought back to life.
