World Without End?

Synopsis

Defenders #5 synopsis by Julio Molina-Muscara
Rating: 5 stars

While the Valkyrie wonders the streets thinking (about herself, the Defenders, the girl who she used to be, Barbara Denton), she’s attacked by green hooded men. Valkyrie handles them well, and Doctor Strange helps her beat them for good. He takes her to his mansion, the Sanctum Santorium.

Strange suggests Valkyrie to speak to the Sub-Mariner and Hulk, and hands her ruby crystals to find them.

On her flying horse Aragorn, Valkyrie locates Namor first. He is with Namorita. He is rude to the Valkyrie and suddenly vanishes! Valkyrie and Namorita reach the Hulk, but he prefers to be left alone instead of helping them... When Hulk attacks the Valkyrie, he also vanishes.

Using the magical crystals, Valkyrie and Namorita reach a lighthouse protected with a force field. Using her mystical blade, Valkyrie slices a door open and finds Omegatron, the machine created by Yandroth, the first enemy of the Defenders.

Note: Omegatron has the power to destroy the planet by saying “Yandroth” out loud. A counter triggers that mechanism. Doctor Strange halted it using a time-stop spell. Unfortunately, the spell weakened, and the countdown resumed. There are a few minutes left before Omegatron can accomplish its deadly purpose!

As Valkyrie and Namorita dwell on the premises, they’re attacked by Hulk, Namor, and duplicates of them, all acting under Omegatron’s control. Aragorn helps the Valkyrie identify the genuine heroes who come to their senses after the blond warrior woman beats them.

Suddenly, Omegatron takes on a giant human-like form. The Sub-Mariner creates a tidal wave to stop it and Hulk hits the ground. None of these attacks halt it. Valkyrie cuts Omegatron’s head off right before finishing the word “Yandroth”. The world is safe.

Valkyrie insists on joining the Defenders. Hulk leaps away, but Namor takes her to Doctor Strange’s mansion.

Also in this issue: Clea, Black Knight.

Defenders #5 Review by (December 7, 2020)

Comments: Omegatron was created in MARVEL FEATURE #1, the first appearance of the Defenders. Namor’s friend Betty Dean Prentiss is one of the earliest Marvel supporting characters, introduced in MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #3 in January 1940, only the third appearance of Namor himself; she had a long run throughout the 1940s and 50s. There’s a joke about letterer Charlotte Jetter on page 12.
