Defenders, The #27 Review by (May 12, 2021)

Review: Some entertaining space opera across three worlds makes for a fun issue, especially a mother robot who considers the smaller robots her babies (and accused Hulk and Yondu of infanticide). It gets a bit stranger next time.

Comments: Part three of five parts. First appearance of Starhawk. The letters page includes one from J.M. DeMatteis, future comics writer, including for THE DEFENDERS.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Defenders, The #27 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

The U.S.S Captain America arrives in orbit around Earth in 3015 and is detected by the Badoon overlords. Lordsire Droom wants the ship seized undamaged so his plan is to deal with the occupants when they try to teleport down to the planet….

Aboard the ship, the Defenders (Doctor Strange, Hulk, Valkyrie, Nighthawk) and the Guardians of the Galaxy (Vance Astro, Charlie-27, Yondu, Martinex) prepare to beam down. Hulk and Yondu, Valkyrie and Vance Astro are to be sent down; the transporter is triggered—and the Badoon deflect the beams elsewhere. Martinex is astonished that he lost them, Jack Norriss reveals himself to be a stowaway and accuses them of having killed his wife….

Valkyrie and Vance Astro find themselves in a blood red swamp on a tropical world, being attacked by vicious hairy lizard creatures. Val becomes weaker with every blow inflicted on the creatures until she collapses into the crimson mud; Astro uses his psychic powers to throw off his attackers and comes to her rescue. As they try to leave the marsh, they are aided by a glowing figure….

Aboard the ship, Dr. Strange has to immobilize Jack Norriss to keep him from causing trouble while they try to find their comrades….

Meanwhile, Hulk and Yondu have arrived in a semi-medieval world during a festival marked by drunken debauchery. They come upon a woman being threatened by several men with swords and chase off the assailants—but the woman is angry. A band of robots seek to arrest them for disrupting the Festival of Death but Hulk smashes them all to bits in seconds. A huge mother robot, outraged that they killed her babies, paralyzes Hulk and Yondu and take stem prisoner….

Dr. Strange has his mind melded with the computer aboard the ship and scans all of the universe for his missing comrades—and burns out the Badoon sensors; Droon commands his minions to locate the new alien energy source….

On the Swampworld where the glowing figure resolves itself into Starhawk and he heals Val’s injuries. They are now in his debt….

The mother robot Zinnia takes Hulk and Yondu before the Emperor Goozot and they are sentenced to the Games….

While the others (Nighthawk, Martinex, Charlie-27) are watching Dr. Strange, the U.S.S Captain America is invaded by Badoon soldiers….
