Angry
Bambi (the fawn with the mind of Chondu the Mystic transferred into it) seeks
to escape the Sanctum Sanctorum while the Defenders are absent….
The
Defenders, meanwhile, are the prisoners of the Headmen; Gorilla-Man (Arthur
Nagan) and Shrunken Bones (Jerold Morgan) place encephalotransmogrifiers on the
heads of Doctor Strange, Valkyrie, and Hulk, intending to make them more docile.
Nighthawk, the mind of Jack Norriss placed into the brain of Chondu, is trying
not to give away to Morgan and Nagan that he isn’t their ally Chondu, is having
a rough time trying to pull off the deception….
Meanwhile,
a young couple, Cissy and Mitchell, take an illegal midnight canoe ride in
Central Park; they are seized by scaly red aliens who drag them aboard their
underwater flying saucer and take off….
Nighthawk
is introduced to the newest member of the group, Ruby Thursday, who finds him
attractive. The Headmen have a meeting and Jack tries again to impersonate
Chondu and mainly embarrasses himself until he hits on the idea of going over
their plans again to know where they all stand. Nagan wants to rule the world
according to scientific principles. Morgan is after recognition for his
scientific achievements. Ruby wants everyone to have a mechanical head like
hers. Jack argues for his freedom….
Meanwhile,
Chondu, in Bambi’s body, crashes through a window and escapes, only to be caught
by the alien Ludberdites and transported to a tiny island with a huge machine
in a temple, along with other captives….
The
Defenders awaken and are confused by their surroundings. Dr. Strange demands
Nighthawk’s brain and it seems the operation has failed. Ruby manages to
strangle Strange with tentacles and swipe Val’s sword, allowing Nagan to tackle
her. Hulk, his hands bound, smashes the floor, causing the entire house to
collapse. This amuses neighbor George Teekle, whose own home was destroyed by
Hulk in issue #21. But Strange has conjured a huge protective bubble around
them; he has Jack-Hawk seize Kyle’s brain and take off through an opening he
made. Nagan is confused because he still thinks the flying hero is Chondu. Ruby
Thursday emits a mass of sticky goo, trapping the heroes as the Headmen make
their escape. In flight, Jack-Hawk is beamed aboard the Ludberdite ship where
he is welcomed by Nebulon, the Celestial Man….
