I Am an Avenger #1 Review by (November 17, 2021)

Review: First volume of Marvel’s Avengers anthology title is a mixed bag. The lead tale is fairly amusing with the Young Avengers trying to get used to being Avengers. The second tale is rather introspective, centering on Danny and Misty’s romantic relationship, being more of a mood piece than a story. Not sure what the point of the Squirrel Girl tale is and the last is just an amusing little trifle. More to come.

Comments: First story: cameos by Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Mockingbird, Wolverine, Thing, Iron Fist, Ant-Man (Scott Lang), Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew), Dr. Strange, and Danielle Cage. Second story: Misty’s Trouble is My Business by Raymond Chandler is a real book, Danny’s Jack Flynn appears to be a fictitious title.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

I Am an Avenger #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

The Young Avengers (Wiccan, Hulkling, Stature, Speed, Hawkeye (Kate Bishop), Vision (Jonas)), have been invited to Avengers Mansion to meet with their heroes and they are more than a little nervous. They enter the Mansion grounds and the defenses start attacking them. They try several methods to get past them but none works until Wiccan merely concentrates on being an Avenger and they shut down. Hawkeye (Clint Barton) greets them, telling them it was a test to see if they are ready to join the team. At this, he lets them into the Mansion and Speed starts acting all fanboy over meeting the Avengers….

“The Books of the Iron Fist” 3.5/5
Writer: Duane Swierczynski. Art: Jason Latour. Colors: Rico Renzi.
Synopsis: Iron Fist is moving to a place closer to Avengers Mansion so Misty Knight is looking for a new apartment too; Danny doesn’t know what splitting the living arrangements will do to their relationship. They meet to divide up their books and a volume on pregnancy reminds him of the trauma caused by a false positive they went through. They each pick a favorite book they think the other would like and embrace, not knowing what the future holds for them, just knowing there will be one.

“Welcome Home, Squirrel Girl” 2/5
Writer: Alex Zalben. Art: Tom Fowler. Colors: Matt Wilson.
Synopsis: Squirrel Girl and Tippy-Toe get off a plane in New York City. Doreen sees Iron Man flying through the air and rejoices that she’s home again.

“Gnu Recruit” 3/5
Writer: Chris Eliopoulos. Art: Chris Eliopoulos. Colors: Chris Eliopoulos.
Synopsis: Throg and Ms. Lion discuss a possible new recruit for the Pet Avengers. He meets all the qualifications except one: he doesn’t have a tail. And so, Wolverine is rejected for the team.
