Story Name:

Night of the Blue Bullet

Synopsis

Invaders #11 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

The Invaders (Captain America, Bucky Barnes, Sub-Mariner, Human Torch, Toro) arrive at the hospital with the critically wounded Jacqueline Falsworth and her father Lord Falsworth, who are rushed into surgery. Torch is frantic about Jacqueline's chances and Cap realizes Torch is in love with her. There is a problem: Jacqueline's blood type keeps changing; Torch offers his own blood for a full transfusion. Suddenly the lights go out; Torch fires up one hand to serve as a lantern for the surgeons while Namor uses his strength to restart the generator. Jacqueline comes through the operation successfully and calls for Cap—leading Torch to bitter feelings....

After surgery, the head doctor takes Cap and Bucky to confront Professor Jonathan Gold whose experiments burned out the generator. Gold and his hot-headed assistant Norris are working on a “human rocket,” a blue, bullet-shaped armor suit that can be worn into battle. Then someone gets a secret message from their Nazi contacts....

The Invaders learn from the doctors that Lord Falsworth will survive but he will never walk again. The Blue Bullet suddenly appears, attacking the heroes and they try to subdue the enemy without destroying the rocket suit, crucial to the Allies' defense. It shakes off Namor and Cap then crashes through the wall into the recovery room; Jacqueline, moving with superhuman speed, snatches up the unconscious Torch and carries him to safety. The Blue Bullet follows her and Namor, doing what he wanted to all along, crashes into it head-first, wrecking the rocket. The Blue Bullet is unmasked as, not Norris, but Professor Gold, who is placed under arrest by the police but yells out that “everything that happens from this moment forward is [their] responsibility”....

Jacqueline is delighted to now have super-powers, super-speed with a flaming trail left behind, which are presumed to be a side effect of the Torch's blood. She thanks Torch for his blood but gushes over being able to join the Invaders with Captain America, leading to the embittered Torch taking off into the night....

Review / Commentaries

Invaders #11 Review by (August 13, 2018)

Review: A fast-paced and exciting tale, making good use of the claustrophobic setting, features a very short-lived villain: the Blue Bullet which is never seen again. Which is a good thing as it really wasn't that interesting, good for this issue's plot but nothing more. Professor Gold, on the other hand, becomes a much more sympathetic figure in the next two issues, leading into another great story.

Comments: Part one of three parts. Origin of Spitfire who gains a costume and name next issue. First appearance of Prof. Jonathan Gold/Johann Goldstein/Blue Bullet who will be in the next issue and then meet his death in INVADERS (1993 series) #4.
