Invaders #19 cover

Story Name:

War Comes to the Wilhelmstrasse

Synopsis

Invaders #19 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

The captive Invaders (Sub-Mariner, Human Torch, Toro, Bucky) are delivered to Berlin for execution in a special portable prison. Unknown to them, Captain America and the Destroyer watch from a nearby rooftop; Cap is eager to rescue his pals but Destroyer reminds him it would be futile. In the street a guard named Hans mocks Bucky who responds with a kick to the face; an enraged Hans moves to shoot Bucky so Cap, unable to stand by any longer, leaps on the baddie. Cap is immediately surrounded by German solders so Destroyer jumps down to join him. A Nazi officer with a gun pointed at Bucky's head persuades Cap to surrender and Hans hurls a grenade at the group surrounding the Destroyer, apparently killing them all....

Also watching from safety are Spitfire, Lord Falsworth, Dyna-Mite, and Oskar. At this point we are told the background of the amnesiac Dyna-Mite: he is Roger Aubrey, best friend of Brian Falsworth, His Lordship's son. Brian became a convinced pacifist, opposing the war so his father threw him out. When Brian and Roger were photographed palling around with Hitler, Lord F disowned his son and has had no word of him since. The team breaks into the Institute of Nazi Science where Roger was shrunk to his present size. After dispatching a number of guards they confront Dr Dietrich whom Roger recognizes. At gunpoint, they force Dietrich to fill in the missing part of the story: he says that after the two Englishmen had endorsed Hitler they were taken prisoner; Roger was immediately forced into Project Crusader; Brian had been thrown into prison where he drank the formula that made him the Destroyer (whom the Falsworths now believe dead). As they stand in shock, Dietrich presses a hidden button, dropping the heroes into a dungeon....

At dawn, Adolf Hitler presides over the ceremony which will see Warrior Woman wed to Master Man and the Invaders executed. Suddenly, to Hitler's surprise, a grenade destroys the machine gunners and the figure of Union Jack swings down from above....

Invaders #19 Review by (October 9, 2018)

Review: Flashback-heavy epic features biffing, explosions, shooting, and a wedding! What's not to like?

Comments: Part four of six parts. Wilhelmstrasse was a central street in Berlin; its name doubled as a figure of speech for the German government as a whole. First (brief) appearance of the second Union Jack, Brian Falsworth. Cap makes a joke about the first good use a Nazi flag has been put to, then laughs at his own joke, hinting it's an Easter egg for older fans, but I can't uncover it.
