A Time of Titans!

Synopsis

Invaders #33 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars

Thor God of Thunder faces the Invaders (Captain America, Sub-Mariner, Human Torch, Spitfire, Union Jack) on his mission from Hitler to assassinate Josef Stalin. Thor calls down a rainstorm which extinguishes Human Torch then proceeds to smack Cap out of the way before beating Subby into the mud. Thor then smashes the Russian big guns but before he can reach Stalin, Namor has whisked the dictator away to his flagship and taken off for Moscow. Thor pursues, leaving the others stranded and Union Jack bemoaning his uselessness. Torch manages to get the damaged train working again they they follow....

Thor contacts Adolf Hitler who has Dr Olsen send an electrical pulse to Mjolnir indicating the way to the Kremlin. As Hitler glories in his dreams of world conquest, Dr Olsen, wracked by guilt, suffers a heart attack and dies. His bandaged assistant Hans agrees to aid Der Fuehrer and is revealed to be Victor Von Doom. Yikes!

The Invaders have reached the Kremlin ahead of Thor and set up defenses, including leaving Union Jack to guard Stalin. The God of Thunder easily brushes the heroes aside, crashes through a window and electrocutes Stalin with a lightning bolt. As the Invaders stare in shock, Thor hears the voice of Adolf Hitler gloating over how easily he has fooled the god, courtesy of the scheming Doom and a radio. Doom then destroys the transporter, mocking Hitler as the one person more evil than he could ever hope to be. Back at the Kremlin, Thor realizes he was duped by Hitler and sees that he needs to learn humility someday. The dying Stalin turns out to be Union Jack in disguise; Thor drains some of the energy to keep him alive and we discover that Jack has now acquired electrical powers. Thor realizes this whole thing was a mistake and wipes the heroes' minds of any memory of him before heading back to Asgard.

Invaders #33 Review by (January 29, 2019)

Review: Wrapped up in a startling fashion. The usual rule has it that two heroes meeting for the first time must assume each other is the bad guy and fight, then work it out and team up to go after the real baddie. Not this time. Here the visiting hero undoes a little of what damage he has caused and wipes everyone's minds, thus making all continuity problems disappear forever. And Union Jack, who wanted powers, gets them through a happy accident. We should all have accidents that convenient. A pre-Doctor Victor Von Doom shows up out of nowhere and deals with Hitler though only temporarily; this plot development was a nice surprise but didn't seem to fit the story very well. And again the art is rather disappointing; I hope this was just temporary.

Comments: Part two of two parts. Hitler's imagination pictures the Warriors Three (Volstagg, Hogun, Fandral) coming to join Thor. Kudos to anyone who can determine where Union Jack found a Stalin mask on such short notice.
