War Ghosts Part III

Synopsis

Invaders #3 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

Captain America and Jim Hammond (the original Human Torch) are on their way to the Naval Base in Bristol because they believe Namor the Sub-Mariner will attack there to get the components for his big bomb. On the way they argue with Iron Man who thinks they should attack Atlantis immediately while Cap wants to try a peaceful solution first. Cap and Jim meet with Admiral October and warn her about Namor’s threat and ask her to wait while they try to work things out; the Admiral rejects the idea of doing nothing while facing a threat and questions Cap’s patriotism for wanting to protect Namor. She refuses to listen and tells Cap to go to a photo session with the troops…

…which was an old trick used to create a distraction and now Winter Soldier has infiltrated the ship for the next part of the plan. While signing autographs, Cap is confronted by an angry seaman who questions whether he is the real Cap or Hydra Cap and wondering if there is a difference. Cap wishes there was more he could do in this situation. He leaves and joins up with Jim and they head out….

In Atlantis, Namor is informed that the missiles are ready, needing only one more component; he also knows that Cap achieved nothing in his visit to the Naval Base. Again, his adviser Machan points out that Cap is now heading to see the Petersons and that Namor should deal with them….

At the Base, Bucky is caught by a guard and he overpowers the man and continue with the mission—but a scientist named Anna has also seen him; Bucky explains that they have to stop Namor and gives his gun to Anna, telling her to shoot him if she thinks he’s wrong….

Cap and Jim arrive at the Peterson home in Maine where Cap talks to the gravely ill Randall, wanting to know if the old soldier can help him learn why Namor want to go to war with the surface world again. Meanwhile, Nay is trying to convince Jim that Namor is a good man unfairly treated by his old friends—but Cap catches her signaling Namor through the fish tank and suddenly the Sub-Mariner is smashing through the wall and hurling Cap into the distance so that the Human Torch has go after him. Namor, meanwhile, confronts Randall, accusing him of failing to destroy all the “evidence.” Randall insists he’s tried to protect Namor—and then he collapses and dies. With tears in his eyes, Namor heads back to the ocean. When Cap and Torch return, Nay promises to tell them who Namor really is….

Review / Commentaries

Invaders #3 Review by (October 1, 2019)

Review: Here we learn that Namor really does have a heart, caring for the Petersons all these years while they guarded his secrets. The shot of Namor weeping after he’s caused the death of his oldest friend is quite memorable; and next issue we find why Namor is so fond of the Petersons. We also see that the Secret Empire still hangs over Cap’s head and he still has no control over his image and reputation. Plus, this story seems to take place before Cap’s most recent series which has him in prison or on the run after being framed for murder; I’m sure that would have been an added headache for him. Even more we see that Bucky has his own concerns with inspiring trust in others, seeing as he was a brainwashed Soviet assassin and war criminal. This latest iteration of the Invaders has come a long way since Roy Thomas put them together in the 1970s and even after all these years there is still rich characterization. Cool.

Comments: Carlos Magno drew the modern scenes while Butch Guice did the wartime episodes.
