Invaders, The #6 Review by (December 16, 2019)

Review: An overwhelming finale to the first story arc (which leads directly into the next one so don’t blink) leaves us teetering on the brink of panic. Despite the heroic actions of Cap and the Avengers, Namor has achieved his goal of capturing a surface town for his own secret reasons—so why does the issue end with an ironic look at his desire to create a better world in light of the carnage he saw in the War? Because we’ve had a close look at his means. But we know his goal and we’ve seen his means—but what are his objectives? What steps is he taking to achieve his goal? The next arc is called “Dead in the Water” and that doesn’t sound so good to me. Pretty cool comic.

Comments: Carlos Magno drew the modern scenes while Butch Guice did the wartime episodes. Seen briefly in the wartime flashback: Whizzer, Miss America, Master Man, U-Man, Warrior Woman, Baron Blood.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Invaders, The #6 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Flashback to the War: In the city of Eisenach, the Invaders battle the Super-Axis and retreat as Allied bombers destroy the city; Sub-Mariner and his pal Tommy Machan mourn the civilians who perished in the attack….

Now: Namor has launched his missiles at the Maine coast and Captain America sees that the missiles contained a chemical weapon that is turning the surface people into blue-skinned water-breathers. Cap, donning a breather, breaks open a fire hydrant to spray the suffering humans with water. Iron Man sees Namor controlling the sea to have it wash over the land and goes to stop him but Captain Marvel heads him off: now that the humans breathe water, inundating the town is the only way to keep them alive. Shellhead and Carol go to the Navy base while the disembodied head of the Human Torch asks Cap to rescue Nay Peterson so Cap heads off by motorcycle to her home….

At the Navy Base, Roman Peterson transforms into a water-breather but not his two henchmen: he learns that they were Atlanteans altered to resemble humans and with the inrush of water, they drown, having given their lives for their nation. Namor arrives and embraces Roman….

At the Peterson home, Cap finds Nay who has collapsed trying to get to the water. He picks her up and jumps into the ocean with her, reviving her. They look up to see Namor and Roman and Machan watching them, backed by the Atlantean army….

Several days later, Winter Soldier calls Tony Stark to say he can’t find Cap. Tony blames Cap for allowing the disaster to go as far as it did: an entire town is submerged under water, three thousand people now breathing water. Tony has Torch’s head hooked up to machinery to keep him alive, while Bucky plans vengeance against Namor….

Flashback to the War: Bucky joins Tommy Machan and Namor as they ponder the civilian casualties at Eisenach; talk soon turns to what they want to do after the war. Namor says “I will make a world where this cannot happen again. I will make a better world.”
