Synopsis

Iron Man: Rapture #1 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 3.5 stars
Tony Stark suffers a serious heart attack; Pepper Potts has him rushed to the hospital. His life is saved but the doctor recommends a heart transplant. Tony is impatient and doesn’t trust the doctors so he goes home, assuring his beloved Pepper that he knows what he’s doing….

As Pepper, Rhodey, and Dr. Serrano (psychologist) watch, Tony operates on himself, installing an artificial heart he designed. He refuses to do the follow-up with the doctors, refuses the meds prescribed, and won’t do the recommended exercises. Instead, he insists he feels like a new man and doesn’t want to stop. Pepper and Rhodey meet with the doctor but there’s little he can do; Tony grows impatient with his friends asking about his health. Pepper grows increasingly worried about what he’s doing but he tries to assure her that all is good. But he claims to be getting better while increasingly shutting them out as he is building a new mechanized body for himself. Finally, Tony allows a tech named Steve to come down to see what he’s doing. Steve enters the lab and discovers an AI has formed—then he is killed by Tony Stark 2.0, taking over Tony Stark’s cyborg body….

Review / Commentaries

Iron Man: Rapture #1 Review by (August 20, 2022)
RobFJ - I forgot to say the synopsis is by T Vernon.

Comments: Story set in Earth-11011; this Tony Stark 2.0 is not the same one featured in IRON MAN: HYPERVELOCITY. This miniseries is always referred to as IRON MAN: RAPTURE, despite the Marvel Database including the definite article as IRON MAN: THE RAPTURE.

Review: Alternate universe Iron Man tale (even if Tony never dons the armor) shows what would happen if Tony Stark became too ego-driven in attempting to improve himself that his own technology swallows him up and becomes a danger to the rest of the world. Pretty good tale makes great use of shadows and darkness for a science-fiction milieu that is usually depicted as bright and shiny. The story is a bit drawn out but they had to fill four issues with an Iron Man versus War Machine battle playing out against Pepper’s being trapped in the nightmare world which is not as well drawn as it could have been. Overall, a decent and offbeat adventure for a familiar hero.
