Synopsis

Iron Man #217 synopsis by T Vernon
Rating: 4 stars
After his betrayal by his friend Clytemnestra Erwin (last issue), Tony Stark has thrown himself into his work, first eliminating the chameleon circuitry which was determined to be the cause of his degenerative nerve damage....

Tony welcomes reporters to a press conference announcing the beginning of the new Stark Enterprises in California. He is impressed by one Marcy Pearson and sounds her out about becoming his public relations chief, inviting her to lunch later. He stops by the airfield where Rhodey is overseeing the delivery of a new high-tech helicopter—and updating us on Rhodey's injuries from issues #215-216 (he's mostly over it). After Tony leaves, Rhodey is delighted to learn the manufacturer sent a newer model than they had ordered (uh oh)....

Tony shows Marcy his new home, under construction and then takes her to lunch at Disneyland—rented for the day. Impressed, she accepts the job. Back at the company, Rhodey is checking out his new toy when the copter seals him inside and begins destroying everything that crosses its path, all independent of the controls. Rhodey radios Tony, who makes his apologies to Marcy and dashes off, soon arriving at the company as Iron Man. After rescuing endangered staff he orders the administration building evacuated as the Adap-Tor begins to climb the wall and initiates the countdown for self-destruction. Shellhead uses reverse magnetism to remove the machine from the walls but it reconfigures itself into a plane and zooms around to crash into the building. Unable to shoot it down for fear of harming Rhodey, Iron Man knocks it off course as he and Rhodey try to figure out how to gain control. Plummeting toward the ground, the Adap-Tor drills into the earth and again heads for the admin building. As the thing enters the basement area, Rhodey tells Shellhead to destroy the thing, sacrificing his life to save the company. At this point Rhodey pulls out some wires and the machine stops. Whew.

Epilogue: A few days later, Tony receives a call from Justin Hammer, admitting responsibility for the Adap-Tor and warning Tony not to be a thorn in his side. Tony has a warning for him in return....

Review / Commentaries

Iron Man #217 Review by (February 9, 2017)
Comments: First appearance of Marcy Pearson; Tony comments on her brown eyes, but they are clearly blue on her first page. Justin Hammer last appeared in issues #125-127. The Griswold family is turned away from Disneyland and heads over to Wallyworld; this is a gag reference to the movie NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION.

Review: Nice little issue featuring a non-human menace and leading up to the return of an old villain. The suspense builds dramatically as Shellhead and Rhodey go up against the Adap-Tor. Tony decides Marcy Pearson is the ideal person to head his public relations department after she asks only a single question (that Tony doesn't answer)? Sure, Tony, rationalize picking up women any way you want. And renting Disneyland for the day is overkill—and he must have paid a pretty penny to arrange this in a couple of hours. She's charming; I hope she has some staying power (she does, I peeked ahead).
