Synopsis

By Rob Johnson
Rating: 3.5 stars
In the reality created by Scarlet Witch mutants rule and homo sapiens is on the way out. But Stark Industries is still one of the most successful companies in the world. However Tony Stark is dominated by his retired father Howard.

As well as running his company, Tony uses a primitive Iron Man armour to compete in Sapien Death Match, a televised contest between armoured non-mutants with Sentinels running interference. (The Sentinels are supposedly deliberately inferior to the ones used by the ruling House of Magneto.)

All the Sentinels are down, and Tony defeats what he thinks is his last human opponent, Johnny Storm. Only to be taken out by a surprise attack from his father.

Back at Stark HQ in Chicago, Tony has invented a new PC to beat a rival offering. He and Howard visit Hank McCoy and Forge who are working on an android they call the Vision Project. But Howard slips off to see Henry Pym. Tony follows and finds them secretly working on mapping the mutant genome. Howard pretends not to have know Pym was doing something so illegal.

Not able to escape his inferiority complex where his dad's concerned, Tony's drinking. But he's also been working on a much better Iron Man armour, with an AI called JARVIS.

Tony finds Pym missing. When he goes to see Howard about it, his father puts him down again. He claims that he'd had to make hard choices to build the company, things that Tony couldn't face. And he hints that he has more hard choices to make now.

Tony takes his new armour out for a secret test flight, and JARVIS locates Henry Pym in a meeting of human revolutionaries. Tony tries to break the meeting up relatively gently. Until  a trio of Sentinels take a firmer approach. They mistake armoured Tony for one of the enemy. And Tony discovers his father is controlling one of them.

Review / Commentaries

Iron Man House of M #1 Review by (July 9, 2013)
I have some problems with Pat Lee's art. He especially can't draw necks! Howard Stark is of course long dead in the main Marvel timeline. Johnny Storm and his companions didn't become the Fantastic Four in HoM. The series FF:HoM instead features Dr Doom leading a team called the Fearsome Four. Sentinels in the main timeline are giant mutant-hunting robots. Obviously in this reality they have been programmed to do the opposite (as they will be in the post-HoM Sentinel Squad O*N*E limited series). Tony's business rival Wyngarde is probably Mastermind, Jason Wyngarde. I don't believe he's previously been shown to have business acumen, but his arms business is mentioned in HoM: Avengers #3. Henry Pym is (currently) Yellowjacket in the main Marvel timeline, but is actually a Skrull imposter Criti Noll at this time, and New Avengers #45 will show that he and other Skrulls realised that reality has changed. The Vision Project never has a chance to be completed before this reality gets cancelled. I believe that having an AI called JARVIS won't happen in mainstream Marvel until Pepper Potts gets one in her Rescue suit in IM(2008)#11. (Or the Iron Man film that year.)
