Synopsis

Monsters Unleashed #3 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Outside San Diego, California, the assembled heroes find themselves between two large groups of monsters. Suddenly, to the heroes' surprise, the newly arrived group of creatures, led by Fin Fang Foom, attacks the alien monsters in defense of Earth. Captain America (Sam Wilson) leads the human heroes to rescue the civilians from the massive melee. The new monsters defeat the old ones and take their leave, Fin Fang Foom making it clear they did not fight the battle on the humans' behalf as they vanish. Maria Hill and SHIELD coordinate the National Guard and other emergency resources (including Damage Control)....

Elsa Bloodstone arrives and offers to shed some light on the situation. They all repair to Parker Industries where Elsa shows them Kei Kawade, who, she learned, was at the site of several monster appearances over the previous few months. When Kei's parents arrive the whole story is pieced together. When he draws a picture of a monster in his notebook, the monster appears. He demonstrates and Devil Dinosaur, with Moon Girl in tow, crashes through the wall. His parents fill in the background: Kei is an Inhuman, subjected to Terrigenesis; when monsters started appearing, his parents connected it to him but didn't know why but they had to keep moving around the country. Medusa summons Karnak to fill in the big picture: a monster called the Leviathon Mother awakens every few thousand years to feed, sending her creatures to overwhelm worlds and prepare for the arrival of their queen. A great warrior arose born to fight the Leviathons, able to raise monsters of her own to battle; problem was, she failed and was killed. Lunella, with Kei apart from the grownups, tells him she learned to translate the monsters'' speech and something really bad is coming....

In space, the Leviathon Mother awakens from her hibernation and is told by her minions that her new nest is not yet ready. They tell her of the world's inhabitants defending their planet so she orders all of her children to crush the resistance and kill the Inhuman....

Review / Commentaries

Monsters Unleashed #3 Review by (February 16, 2017)
Characters (with speaking parts): Elsa Bloodstone, Dr Strange, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Maria Hill, SHIELD. Avengers: Captain America (Sam Wilson), Hercules, Spider-Man (Peter Parker), Vision. X-Men: Old Man Logan. Inhumans: Medusa, Karnak. Guardians of the Galaxy: Star-Lord, Groot, Rocket Raccoon. Champions: Hulk (Amadeus Cho), Ms Marvel (Kamala Khan).

Comments: Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) and Nova (Sam Alexander) are on the cover but do not appear inside the issue. The second group of monsters, in defense of Earth, include quite a few familiar faces from Marvel's pre-FF days. Kei Kawade understands Groot when he speaks. Gerry Alanguilan and Michael Jason Paz share the inking duties.

Review: Full review appears with issue #1.

Tie-ins from this week and next:-

Doctor Strange #1.MU

The de-magicked Dr Strange doesn't do too well when he tries to help the heroes and good monsters, especially Googam and his dad Goom, in San Diego as seen in the current issue. Then he and Googam chase 1 of the bad monsters to the Arctic.

Champions #1.MU

This story is set at the beginning of Monsters Unleashed. The team are involved with a pipeline protest in California, against a super-team hired by Roxxon. But both sides combine against some monsters. Then the Champions head off to fight another monster in Los Angeles in MU#1.
