Synopsis

New Avengers (2010 series) #21 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
Last issue the New Avengers went off to deal with an incident in Miami but when they got there they found Norman Osborn and his Dark Avengers had resolved the problem already. The 2 teams fought and the NAv lost. Meanwhile Jessica Jones stayed behind in Avengers Mansion with her baby Danielle Cage because Osborn had threatened the kid.

There's an ongoing crowd outside the Mansion grounds protesting the damage caused by superhero battles, most recently in the Fear Itself event. They blame the Avengers, especially Captain America, rather than the villains and want the heroes to leave New York City. They complain that no-one's coming out to answer their complaints (because the team are currently outside NY). Then Jess and baby and nanny Squirrel Girl come out of the house and through the gates to walk through the protesters, none of whom are sure who they are. Jess tries to tell them that Cap and the Avengers *defend* them against the bad guys. But someone throws a bottle of beer at her head (luckily she's super-durable). A fight breaks out *between* the protesters and the 2 women make a run for it. And Doreen Green calls an army of squirrels to defend them.

In Miami the NAv retreated from the DAv last issue but were confronted by a Thor. Wolverine can tell it's not the real deal (we know it's the Thor clone Ragnarok) and he leaps to the attack plunging adamantium claws into his chest. The result is an explosion of energy which knocks the team off their building roof. As the 2 opponents fight in the sky Spider-Man (in his white Fantastic Four costume) uses his webbing to save the fall of Dr Strange (unconscious), Ms Marvel, Daredevil, Mockingbird, Iron Fist and Luke Cage. Luke gets Spidey to throw him into the fight where he slams into Thor. Badly beaten Wolverine falls away to be also saved by SM. Cage's momentum carries Thor into an office building. But the (fake) Thunder God punches him back out and follows him. There's a brief unequal meeting with Spidey who quickly sends his webbing to grab (conscious) Iron Fist and throw him at the foe. DD and some webbing save Luke (again). Mocky (super-powered these days) request to be thrown into the battle too but Danny Rand's Iron Fist meets the clone and it's all over.

Nearby Osborn and the DAv hear the sound of that clash. Trickshot (as Hawkeye), Toxie Doxie (as Scarlet Witch) and Gorgon (as Dark Wolverine) want to go back to finish off the Avengers. But NO asks the opinion of Skaar (son of Hulk) who wisely responds that the public saw the Avengers start the fight last issue and lose. If *they* now attack the NAv they risk losing public support. That isn't good enough for Barney Barton who has to be physically restrained by Norman (with his new superstrength). They see the Avengers' mini-carrier take off, but before leaving the heroes drop the body of 'Thor' down to them.

Our team intend to have words with Victoria Hand who sent them to the wrong place last issue, giving the DAv time to become the heroes. But when they get back to the Mansion they see a SWAT team dispersing the crowd but claiming the Mansion is now under the control of the Federal Government.

Review / Commentaries

New Avengers (2010 series) #21 Review by (August 23, 2025)
The cover continues to have Spider-Man in the wrong costume and Thing there when he ain't inside. Maybe it's for recognition value.

The main Avengers team also currently occupies Avengers Mansion while Avengers Tower is being rebuilt (after being destroyed in the Fear Itself event). But they and Captain America have been captured by Madame Hydra and Monica Rapaccini of AIM in #22-23 of the current Av series. And Norman Osborn will pop over for #22 before returning next issue with the rest of the DAv.

Apart from a flashback in #24 during the Avengers Vs X-Men event, Danielle Cage, Jessica Jones and Squirrel Girl are out of this series until #31. Before AvsX Jess will show in the closing epilogue of Av: Children's Crusade and in Av Assemble #6, and after the fb Doreen Green will be in another AvsX fb in Av#28.

Ragnarok will be out of action until Dark Av #175 (continuing Thunderbolts numbering).
