Synopsis

New Avengers (2010 series) #17 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
There's a problem at the Stark Resilient Satellite Labs in Paramus, New Jersey and Iron Man has called the New Avengers for help. When they get there they find it's under attack by a giant metal robot which IM says is Ultimo and he tells them not to just hit it. But not before Ms Marvel does so, and then Dr Strange, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Spider-Man (in his white Future Foundation costume) and Wolverine jump out of their Minicarrier to add their blows or mystic blasts. The robot suddenly emits an allround blast that sends them all flying, and Tony Stark manages to get in the explanation that it absorbs kinetic energy and sends it back. Mockingbird piloting the plane relays the message to all her teammates to stand down. But Stephen Strange has a plan and he imprisons the robot in the Crimson Bands Of Cyttorak, and Wolverine climbs up to start slicing and dicing its head.  Spidey and Tony have a midair science chat establishing that it usually isn't manned or self-directing but remote controlled, but this is a new design so all bets are off. Stark doesn't know who sent it or what it wants. SM detects advanced tech in the hole Logan is making. Bobbi Morse directs Danny Rand to use his Iron Fist power to make the foe fall over. Wolvie is still hacking when Iron Man warns him of a big metal spider that has emerged from the robot. It grabs him and slashes his throat and then produces a vial to catch some of the blood. It seals the vial and puts it on a drone which flies away with it, faster than IM or MsM can follow. The old duo of of Luke Cage and Iron Fist get the spider off Wolverine who returns to the attack until Ultimo starts to explode.

Now we go back 15 minutes to see Norman Osborn and his followers watching and listening to the battle remotely. Ultimo is being controlled by AIM. They weren't expecting Avengers to get there so quickly, nor were they prepared for Dr Strange. There's a danger their control might be traced so they ask Osborn if he wants to abort the mission, which turns out to be to steal Iron Man's armour for him. Seeing his main foe Spider-Man among the heroes firms his desire to win. He's flanked by Superia and Madame Hydra (wearing a hooded cloak so we can't tell whether she still has the octopoid on her head) from #16.1, now joined by the villain Gorgon. The last 2 urge caution but Deidre Wentworth is a true believer and Norman says they can go back to fighting each other as well as the heroes or they can remain united under him. An AIMer controlling the spider attacking Wolverine suggests taking the blood sample and the group are eager to get hold of his DNA. (But surely he's left lots of blood lying around in the past.) The extraction is a success as we've seen. Osborn sees Spidey again and orders the self-destruction of Ultimo.

We switch back to the Avengers who are caught in the blast. But we'll have to wait 2 issues to see the result.

Review / Commentaries

New Avengers (2010 series) #17 Review by (August 2, 2025)
In this issue and on the cover Spider-Man wears his white Future Foundation costume. He's part of the Fantastic Four while Human Torch is away in the Negative Zone being 'dead'. Thing is also shown on the cover in his white costume but isn't actually within, or in any later issues until #23. Daredevil's also on the cover but not inside, but he will join in for #19 on. I blame the editors.

Spider-Man got the white costume in F(uture)F(oundation) #1 when he joined them before Fear Itself. He's worn it on and off since then but this is the 1st time it's appeared in this series. (Or I believe in any Avengers series.)

Those-who-know suggest that the robot here isn't Ultimo itself but something derived from its tech. The real deal was last seen in the War Machine (2009) series and will next surface in the 2020 Force Works mini-series.

In #16.1 Madame Hydra sported the octopoid thing on her head that she was inflicted with in the Secret Warriors series. Now she's wearing a hooded cloak so we can't see whether it's there or not. But in next issue's recent flashbacks she appears without the octopoid so we can assume that it's not under the hood here.

Gorgon (Tomi Shishido) is a Hand villain who featured in Wolverine (2003) #20-31 (the Enemy Of The State and Agent Of SHIELD arcs). Then he joined forces with Baron Strucker and Olivia Sarkissian in the Secret Warriors series. (Strangely the only solo Wolverine stories I really liked, and 1 of my favourite series.) And now he's here.

The New Avengers don't actually appear in their next issue which concentrates on Norman Osborn assembling a new version of his Dark Avengers.
