Captain America: Nazi?!

Synopsis

New Avengers (2010 series) #12 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
The time-split stories continue, but now without an added episode of the Avengers History.

Now surgeons in Barrington Hospital in Rhode Island are battling to save the life of Mockingbird (Bobbi Morse), shot in the stomach by HAMMER Agents in #9. Her ex-husband Hawkeye (Clint Barton) is watching and is joined by some New Avengers (Jessica Jones, Ms Marvel, Spider-Man & Thing) and Avenger/friend Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew) (who flew Avenger Barton here last issue). Clint wants HAMMER and their leader Superia smashed before Bobbi gets out of surgery. Jess J tells him her husband (Luke Cage) is working on a lead.

In Helsingborg Castle in Sweden in 1959 Nick Fury's Avengers Initiative have routed (a) Red Skull and his Nazi troops but now face (a) Captain America in a room on fire. But Fury knows this isn't the real Cap. He tells Kraven and Sabretooth to go find the Skull and stop him getting away. He tells Atlantean Namora to get away from the heat and renew her strength in water. He tells Ernst Sablinov (sometimes known as Silver Sable) and Ulysses Bloodstone to stay with him to deal with the fake Cap (and I think Dominic Fortune stays too). Cap throws his shield at Fury who fires his sub-machine gun and ducks. But then Cap's on him. Bloodstone fires another SMG but the bullets bounce off Cap (or his costume), and the shield comes back round to hit *him*. Fury fires more bullets which at least knock Cap down, Cap claims to be a super-soldier (like the real thing) but Fury hits him with his gun (presumably out of bullets).

In the Barrington Police Precinct a lone captured female HAMMER Agent waits to be interrogated. New Avengers Dr Strange, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Wolverine are trying to persuade the cops to let *them* interview her, but they don't like interference from 'civilians' and want to wait for the Feds. Cage tells them they're part of Commander Steve Rogers' Avengers Initiative so they're technically Government officials and probably outrank the top cop they're talking to. So Wolverine goes in to frighten her.

In 1959 Red Skull's troops are panicking and their leader asks him what they should do. He says they're going to escape in submarines and he also promises a reward for each of the dead enemy. But then Kraven with a sniper rifle shoots the minion through the head and curses missing his intended target. Skull runs off clutching an important briefcase while his soldiers shoot at the assassin. But he only runs into Victor Creed who wades through more soldiers to get to him while being hit by various bullets. He reaches RS but is then 'accidentally' pierced by 1 of Kraven's bullets (well there is bad blood between them). Skull and 2 remaining troopers reach a sub and get in, with Skull saying they must protect the project. They see their super-soldier crashing in flames from a high castle window and Fury standing up there watching.

The 3 Nazis escape in the submarine. But then they see Namora outside. She punches through the window and then rips the hatch cover off. The 2 soldiers are ejected into the sea. But RS has donned breathing apparatus and swims out with his briefcase. However Namora rips the breathing mask off and drags him gasping to the dock. All the other troops have been captured and Fury tells them this isn't even the real Red Skull. Namora hands Nick the briefcase and he opens it. We don't see what's within but Fury is shocked and fake Skull says their cities will die in flames. So Creed rips his head off which angers Fury because they've now lost a source of information.

For the last scene Victoria Hand, the NAv's liaison with Steve Rogers who also used to work for Norman Osborn and the original HAMMER, is attacked in her office by Superia who accuses her of selling HAMMER out to them. Hand counters that it was stupid of her the get 1 of her gang to openly ask her to join the new HAMMER. She knew Rogers would have been aware of that call so she reported it to him and pointed the NAv in the right direction. But now she has his *complete* trust, and if Superia does what she tells her they can make HAMMER a force to be reckoned with.

Review / Commentaries

New Avengers (2010 series) #12 Review by (February 1, 2025)
Howard Chaykin and Edgar Delgado continue as art team on the 1959 stuff.

Both storylines will continue into next issue.

It will take a while before we learn which side Victoria Hand is really on.

Only Nick Fury and Dominic Fortune will carry over in the 1959 section. But they'll then be reunited with the others in the Avengers 1959 mini-series.

This Red Skull isn't the original who's at this time in suspended animation (since near the end of WWII). Neither is he any of the imposters who have been invented to explain apps in later 1940s comics. Nor is he Albert Malik who made apps in the mid-50s revival of Captain America and was responsible for the deaths of Peter Parker's parents.

Similarly this isn't the original Cap, also in suspended animation. Nor is he Spirit of '76 or Patriot who have been retconned as taking over the role post-WWII. And he's not the Commie-bashing Cap of the mid-50's revival.
