Meet the new team?!

Synopsis

New Avengers (2010 series) #10 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
This issue's tale is again split between 1959 and the current day, not to mention the add-on instalment of the Avengers' History.

Last issue in 1959 Nazi-hunter Nick Fury was asked to form a team called the Avengers Initiative. Now he's in Madripoor with Dum-Dum Dugan on a recruiting drive. Timothy asks Nick why he doesn't just use the rest of his WWII Howling Commandos, but Fury says they need guys with something extra. They know they've found their man when they see him punching someone else through a window. Fury approaches Victor Creed who's about to attack *him* when Dugan shoots him through the head. Of course they know about his healing factor and just wait for him to recover. And then Fury invites him to join his black ops team.

Last issue in the present the New Avengers found ex-HAMMER Agents led by Superia setting up a base in Rhode Island. They attacked and the fight is still going on. Thing and Wolverine are wading through the minions, aided by illusions cast by Dr Strange. Superia grabs a flask of something but then Ms Marvel smashes through a wall to attack her. However Carol Danvers is surprised at the blast Superia repels her with, and they start a long fight.

In 1959 in Paris Dominic Fortune is being entertained by a scantily-clad lady who he thinks he ought to know. But she's a Nazi assassin and pulls a knife on him for stealing money from her organisation. When she doesn't succeed a male with a machine gun bursts in to finish the job. Fortune jumps off a balcony to escape and he's picked up by Fury, Dugan and Creed in a military jeep.

Outside the Rhode Island building Mockingbird, undercover as a waitress in a nearby coffee shop, has been shot in the stomach and Spider-Man's fighting to keep other HAMMER Agents off her. Inside Superia's now holding her own against Wolverine as well as MsM. She wants to know how they learned about her plans, but hits them with an even bigger blast when they don't answer. Outside Dr Strange uses his human doctor skill to try to help Bobbi Morse while Thing joins Spidey in defence. Stephen Strange asks someone to call an ambulance, and SM KOs a goon to get his mobile phone to ring 911. But DrS doesn't think she'll make it.

In 1959 on a private beach in Florida Fury (with the other 3) approaches a bikini-clad woman with a knife at her hip. He addresses her as Aquaria but she says surface people are only allowed to call her Namora. He offers her and her boyfriend a job if the man in the trees will stop aiming a sniper rifle at him. Namora tells Sergei to come out and we learn that it's Kraven The Hunter. But it also turns out that he and Creed are enemies, and Sergei shoots Victor in the chest. While Creed heals again Fury asks K & N to join the team. He orders the 2 men to forget their feud which they do grudgingly.

Iron Fist, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage have taken away 3 large trucks containing HAMMER equipment. Danny Rand and Jess drove theirs but Luke couldn't get his started so he's carried it. Now he tears the back off to see what's inside and gets blasted in the face by a gun wielded by a HAMMER female. He takes the gun off her and they try to persuade her to tell them what Superia's plan is. But then they see cop cars and ambulances racing to where they took the trucks from.

The next scene is 1959 in Boston, Massachusetts where 2 men meet each thinking the other has arranged the meeting. They introduce themselves as Ulysses Bloodstone the monster hunter and Ernst Sablinova, called Silver Sable during WWII. Then Nick Fury and his entourage of 5 arrive and asks them to join the Avengers. He explains that Red Skull seems to be alive and forming a 4th Reich. And rumour has it he's got a secret weapon which they need to get hold of without accidentally blowing up the world.

Finally Superia defeats Logan and MsM and leaps to the top of the building. She sees her men all downed and the police (who also want to arrest Spidey) and paramedics on the scene. So she emits an even bigger blast which looks like it's killing them all.

Avengers Assemble - the oral history of the Earth's mightiest heroes Chapter 14

Writer: Brian Michael Bendis. Penciler/Inker: .

Synopsis

By ?
Rating: 0 stars
In the subsequent book this will be renamed Chapter 16.

Illoes by Richard Howell & Tomas Mason and Rich Buckler & Joe Sinnott.

We skip over #98-101 (an Olympian epic followed by a Harlan Ellison 1-off), except for a reference to Hawkeye's new purple mini-skirt costume, to concentrate on #102. There's some chat about why members regularly drop out for a time because of the stress of the job. And a lot of views about the burgeoning Scarlet Witch/Vision romance. Then #102 foregrounds Grim Reaper (Eric Williams)' offer to transfer Vision's mind (based on that of his brother Wonder Man (Simon Williams)) into the comatose body of Simon - as long as Vizh helps him kill the Avengers.

This feature continues in Avengers #11.

Review / Commentaries

New Avengers (2010 series) #10 Review by (January 18, 2025)
Superia was strong and could emit blasts from her hands in her apps in Captain America vol 1. But her intellect and leadership skills featured heavily there too. However now her physical abilities seem vastly magnified.

She'll escape now but the team will catch up with her in #12.

Victor Creed is normally known as Sabretooth. His 1st published app was Iron Fist #14 bnut it was several more apps before he 'met' his arch-enemy Wolverine in of all places Power Pack #27. Since then they've been revealed to have a long history. He's had chronologically previous apps to this, mostly shared with Logan. The 2 most recent were the 1929 St Valentine’s Day Massacre in Savage Wolverine #20 and a 1942 flashback adventure with Wolvie and Captain America in Wolverine vol 3 #54,

Dominic Fortune has a habit of being drawn by Howard Chaykin. He began with that partnership with tales in Marvel Preview magazine #2, the Marvel Super Action magazine 1-shot and Hulk! magazine #21-26. In the middle of that run they had a solo spot in Marvel Premiere comic #56. All these were set in the 30's, but he had some in the 40's too.
His most recently-published app was his own mini-series, also with Chaykin and also set in the 30's.
His most chronologically recent app was flashbacks in Web Of Spider-Man #71-72 during WWII.

Namora, Aquaria Nautica Neptunia, cousin of Namor the Sub-Mariner, has been around since Timely days, even having her own short-lived series then.
Chronologically in 1958 she was a member of Bloodstone's Monster Hunters in Marvel: Lost Generation #2, and helped FBI agent Jimmy Woo in Agents Of Atlas #1.
In publishing terms she was recently in Chaos War #1-2. And she'll overlap her apps here with the Fear Itself: The Home Front mini-series.

Kraven here is way before his publishing debut in Amazing Spider-Man #15.
His chronologically most recent app was being caught by Logan poaching elephants in Savage Wolveine #13.
Simultaneous with this run he's being seen in Black Panther: Man Without Fear #518-520.

Ulysses Bloodstone started off in Marvel Presents #1-2 and then migrated to Rampaging Hulk #1-6,8. He was physically last seen in 2010's Nova #33-35.
He's been around for many thousands of years, kept alive by his Bloodgem. His chronologically latest app was MLG#2 with Namora. Before that he formed his Monster Hunters with Dr Druid, Makkari and Zawadi in Marvel Universe #4-7.

Ernst Sablinov is the father of Sivija Sablinova who also goes by the name of Silver Sable. He was introduced in the Silver Sable And The Wild Pack series, and that's where he was most recently seen.
His earlier history as a Nazi hunter has only been briefly mentioned in SS&WP and in Handbooks.

Dum-Dum Dugan will drop out of this story now but his next app will be when the 1959 Avengers get their own mini-series.
